{"id":14004,"date":"2013-08-25T03:08:39","date_gmt":"2013-08-24T17:08:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/?p=14004"},"modified":"2013-08-25T03:08:39","modified_gmt":"2013-08-24T17:08:39","slug":"opera-australia-releases-its-2014-line-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/?p=14004","title":{"rendered":"Opera Australia releases its 2014 line up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-14012\" alt=\"OA14\" src=\"https:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/OA14-325x126.jpg\" width=\"325\" height=\"126\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s rush hour for Sydney&#8217;s performing ensembles as they jostle to release their programmes for 2014 and secure the all important subscription dollar for the year.\u00a0Hot on the heels of the<a href=\"https:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/news\/the-sydney-symphony-orchestra-announces-its-2014-season\/13806.html\"> SSO&#8217;s 2014 season release<\/a>, Opera Australia\u00a0has announced\u00a0it&#8217;s compilation for next year on a re-vamped website.<\/p>\n<p>Nine of the 16 productions offer opera in the classical sense.\u00a0<em> <\/em>Donizetti&#8217;s <em>L&#8217;elisir d&#8217;amore, (The Elixir of Love) <\/em>Tchaikovsky&#8217;s<em> Eugene Onegin <\/em>and<em> <\/em>Rossini&#8217;s<em> Il turco in Italia (The Turk in Italy) <\/em>are likely to spark interest from the left of the field. There is a reprise of <em>La Boheme<\/em>,\u00a0seen earlier in 2013\u00a0and\u00a0repeated in theme of the 2013\/14\u00a0New Year&#8217;s Eve Gala;<em> Carmen <\/em>follows\u00a0its\u00a02013 season\u00a0on Sydney Harbour, the NY Met&#8217;s \u00a0Julie Taymor production of\u00a0 an abridged <em>The Magic Flute<\/em> sung in English and seen last year, returns. The rest comprises staple operatic fare &#8211; Mozart&#8217;s <em>Don Giovanni <\/em>and<em>\u00a0 <\/em>two operas by Verdi,<em> Rigoletto, <\/em>and<em> Otello.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Baroque opera gets a look in\u00a0with the Sydney Festival&#8217;s <em>Dido and Aeneas <\/em>listed \u00a0in the OA collection. Jonas Kaufmann&#8217;s one night only recital of Verdi, Puccini, Bizet &#8216;and more&#8217;\u00a0\u00a0with the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra conducted by Jochen Reider\u00a0is likely to be the hottest ticket in town for the year.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0co-production with the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and Fondazione Teatro Regio, Turin, <em>Eugene Onegin<\/em> should be a treat, directed by\u00a0Wunderkind\u00a0Kasper Holten, Artistic Director of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. <em>Il turco in Italia (The Turk in Italy<\/em>) is directed by the multiple award winning Simon Phillips and features Emma Matthews as Fiorilla. Matthews sings the role of Gilda in <em>Rigoletto,<\/em> with Giorgio Caoduro and Helpmann Award winner Jose Carbo sharing the title\u00a0role; Gianluca Terranova and Diego Torre play the Duke. A bevy of superlative home grown talent makes up the supporting cast &#8211; David Corcoran, Sian Pendry, Shane Lowrencev, David Parkin, Samuel Dundas, Domenica Matthews and Luke Gabbedy.<\/p>\n<p>Powerhouse\u00a0New Zealand born Wagnerian tenor Simon O&#8217;Neill sings the role of <em>Otello. <\/em>O&#8217;Neill sang one of his signature roles, Sergei in <em>Lady<\/em> <em>Macbeth of Mtensk<\/em> for Opera Australian in 2009, and returned to sing\u00a0in Mahler&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Symphony No 8<\/em> with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in 2010.
