For the final concert in the Selby\u00a0& Friends\u00a02013 series, pianist Kathryn Selby indeed meets up with old friends violinist Sophie Rowell and cellist Julian Smiles to perform two cornerstones of the chamber music repertoire, the Piano Trio\u00a0in E flat major opus 1 no 1<\/em> by\u00a0Beethoven and the Piano<\/em> Trio No.4 in E minor, Op.90 ‘Dumky’<\/em>\u00a0by Dvo\u0159\u00e1k, and a\u00a0lesser-\u00ad\u2010 known rarity by Spanish composer Joaqu\u00edn Turina called Circulo, opus 91.<\/em>\u00a0(Circle).<\/p>\n

Julian Smiles says \u201cDvorak’s Dumky Trio is\u00a0a work I always find profoundly moving to hear and play. It is full of simple beauty, surprises that take your breath away, and wild passion.\u201d A former principal cello with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and frequent guest principal\u00a0 with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra,\u00a0 Smiles is currently cellist with Australia Ensemble, the University of New South Wales’ acclaimed resident chamber\u00a0 music ensemble, and the highly successful Goldner String Quartet.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Adelaide-\u00ad\u2010born violinist Sophie Rowell\u00a0led the\u00a0Australian String Quartet until 2011.\u00a0She has given concerts and\u00a0broadcasts in Australia, Europe,\u00a0 North America, Asia and New Zealand. The Quartet\u00a0won the\u00a0 2005 Cremona String Quartet Competition and the 2002 Osaka International Chamber Music Competition. Since 2012 Rowell has pursued her career here and overseas as a soloist, chamber musician and an orchestra\u00a0 principal.<\/p>\n

Sophie Rowell<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Founder, Artistic Director and pianist Kathryn Selby AM, <\/span><\/span>is\u00a0a highly regarded\u00a0chamber music pianist in Australia. In January 2013 Selby was\u00a0made a Member of the Order of Australia\u00a0(AM) for her\u00a0work as a concert pianist and chamber music performer. She began her piano studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and then attended the\u00a0Curtis Institute of Music and Bryn Mawr College in Philadelphia. She\u00a0graduated with a\u00a0Master’s degree from New York’s Juilliard School. She has recorded extensively throughout her career and is the recipient of\u00a0both Churchill and Australia Council Fellowships.<\/p>\n
