Ancient Italian songs and modern Latin dance become entwined when the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra directed by Paul Dyer AO\u00a0 presents Buenos Aires Tango with <\/em>Eduardo Eg\u00fcez <\/span><\/span>& members of his Buenos Aires-based <\/span><\/span>La Chimera.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/em>The<\/span><\/span>\u00a0instrumental ensemble La<\/em> Chimera<\/em> was\u00a0founded in 2001\u00a0<\/span><\/span>with “a particular interest in the relationship between the old world and the modern world.”.\u00a0The Chimera” , <\/em>they say, “<\/em>is a mythological and alchemical symbol of transformation. Together, the two ensembles will perform\u00a0music from Monteverdi and Frescobaldi\u00a0to Gardel and Piazzolla, embracing\u00a0in<\/span><\/span><\/span>tense Argentine tango & sublime 17th century Italian madrigals.<\/p>\n La Chimera\u00a0<\/em>includes another Argentinian master Gabriel Rivano<\/span><\/span>. Gabriel\u2019s maternal grandfather was the famous bandone\u00f3nist and <\/span><\/span>composer\u00a0Adolfo P\u00e9rez, famously known as Pocholo<\/em><\/span><\/span>.<\/em> Pocholo was one of the first bandone\u00f3n tango players and Gabriel <\/span><\/span>inherited not just his passion and talent, but his\u00a0 grandfather\u2019s instrument as well, which he will play\u00a0during this tour.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0The bandone\u00f3n is central to the soundscape of\u00a0the concert, which, observes Paul, “will appear on the Brandenburg stage for the very first time.” He adds \u00a0“This project demands not only exceptional singers but also great story tellers, and we have just that in Argentine mezzo soprano Susanna Moncayo and the Italian baritone Furio Zanasi.”<\/p>\n The concert will be co-directed by Eg\u00fcez and based on his\u00a0<\/span><\/span>recording project and stage show\u00a0Buenos Aires Madrigal.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n “They originated centuries apart and at almost opposite points of the planet, but the marriage between the Argentine tango and the madrigals of 16th and 17th century Italy is one made in heaven,\u201d says Paul. \u201cLyrically the tango and madrigal follow remarkably similar stories and themes and we\u2019ll be using these to tell a love story. It will be profoundly moving and a brave musical journey.\u201d<\/p>\n Madrigals were first sung in Italy\u00a0in the\u00a013th century. They were\u00a0developed by Lassus, Palestrina and A Gabrieli and peaked in the hands of\u00a0Gesualdo and especially, Monteverdi during the 16th and 17th centuries.<\/p>\n At the more recent end of the time scale, the bandone\u00f3n was\u00a0developed in the\u00a0middle of the 19th century and became a solo instrument\u00a0at the turn of that century.\u00a0Rather than a keyboard it has buttons which produce single notes when pushed.<\/p>\n The Tango is said to have\u00a0originated in the\u00a0slums\u00a0of Buenos Aires, also in the 19th century. It has\u00a0been the\u00a0most popular Argentine urban dance of the 20th century and expresses the essence of\u00a0the\u00a0nation’s character.
