His\u00a0machismo and untouchability are countered by\u00a0the\u00a0 consequences of his crimes, moral outrage and revenge as Mozart\u2019s timeless genius takes our flawed hero from smooth operator to hell-bound rebel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">Randall Stewart sings the title role, with\u00a0Qestra Mulqueeney as Donna Anna, and Salina Bussein, Maia Andrews, Pal Smith, Alastair Colgrave, Ian Fisher and Josh Salter\u00a0in Paolo Montoya\u2019s innovative and exciting new production. Artistic Director of Sydney Independent Opera, Dr Steven Stanke conducts the 15-piece Sydney Independent Opera Orchestra.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">With\u00a0libretto by Mozart&#8217;s best known collaborator, Lorenzo\u00a0da Ponte, the opera is\u00a0based on the Don Juan legend as told in Bertati&#8217;s play of\u00a0 1775. Composed on\u00a01787, it premiered in Prague in\u00a01787, conducted by Mozart himself,\u00a0and \u00a0in Vienna in\u00a01788 with\u00a0additional material. It had been seen in London\u00a0by\u00a01817 and in New York in 1826.<\/p>\n<p id=\"O901351.P2\">The commission for Don Giovanni from the impresario Guardasoni followed the triumphant production of <em>Le nozze di Figaro<\/em> in Prague in December 1786. Mozart began work during the summer and left for Prague on 1 October. It is believed that Mozart\u00a0only completed the overture on\u00a0the eve of the performance!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14447\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14447\" style=\"width: 325px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14447\" src=\"https:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Randall+Salina-325x221.jpg\" alt=\"Randall Stewart and Salina Bussein\" width=\"325\" height=\"221\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14447\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Randall Stewart and Salina Bussein<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>From the very first scene where Giovanni murders the father of his latest amorous conquest, the audacious rake and his blindly\u00a0loyal sidekick Leporello\u00a0lurch from one fiasco\u00a0to another. Finally,\u00a0 in one of the greatest and most chilling theatrical scenes of all time,\u00a0the unrepentant lothario\u00a0is damned for all time\u00a0at the grave of his father.<\/p>\n<p>SIO artistic director Dr Steven\u00a0Stanke says \u201c (Opera)\u00a0renews our passions, pushes us out of our comfort zone and reminds us of the rich complexity and depths of our humanity.
