At each Symbiosis Jane and two guest\u00a0instrumentalists present music for duo and trio, with a focus on works\u00a0of the present and of the 20th-century avant-garde. These hour-long\u00a0programs are designed to cast a light on the symbiotic nature of\u00a0chamber music performance: breathing together, thinking together,\u00a0and witnessed at close range by the listeners.<\/p>\n<p><em>Symbiosis I<\/em>, the series opener, includes two world premieres and an Australian premiere. It features guest artists clarinetist Megan Clune\u00a0and viola player James Wannan. It includes the world\u00a0premiere of a pair of new works by Australian composer Jack\u00a0Symonds, as well as the Australian premiere of Elliott Carter&#8217;s\u00a0beautiful late work for soprano and clarinet, Poems of Louis\u00a0Zukofsky, composed in 2008, 4 years before his death at 103.<\/p>\n<p>New York-based Australian soprano Jane\u00a0Sheldon has sung under the direction of William Christie, Charles\u00a0Dutoit and\u00a0Antony Walker and performed with the\u00a0London Philharmonic Orchestra,\u00a0Pinchgut\u00a0Opera, Boston Camerata, the\u00a0Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, Halcyon, Synergy Percussion, and\u00a0Ensemble Offspring. The New York Times describes her as singing &#8220;sublimely\u201d and the Sydney Morning Herald as\u00a0\u201csuperb, with a voice of penetrating beauty, precision and variegated\u00a0colours.\u201d Jane specialises\u00a0in early music and is active\u00a0in creating and performing new works. Jane won the 2011\u00a0Australian\u00a0Art Music Award\u00a0for Performance of the Year with Ensemble Offspring for The Origin Cycle, a work she co-commissioned. Her\u00a0album,<em> North + South<\/em>, was nominated for the 2013 ARIA award for Best Classical Album.\u00a0Upcoming engagements include New York&#8217;s\u00a0Resonant Bodies Festival of contemporary and experimental vocal music and the\u00a0launch of her new album, <em>Nature.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Clarinetist and writer Megan Clune\u00a0studied with Robert Schubert at the Victorian College of the\u00a0Arts and later began the biannual publication <em>World&#8217;s Only<\/em>, a magazine about\u00a0contemporary art and music.\u00a0Since mid-2012 Megan has curated and performed\u00a0at MUSICAL\u00a0ALASKA, a monthly night of contemporary music at Kings Cross\u00a0gallery space Alaska Projects. She is also a performer and manager of\u00a0the Alaska Orchestra. In July 2013, Megan\u00a0performed at the Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival in Massachusetts, USA\u00a0before returning to\u00a0Australia for a series of performances at the Museum of Contemporary Art,\u00a0Sydney in October as part of &#8216;Sounds on the Terrace&#8217; and ART BAR .<\/p>\n<p>Violist James\u00a0Wannan\u00a0is a founding member and co-Artistic Director of\u00a0the Australia Piano Quartet. The quartet has toured nationally, performing at\u00a0the Sydney Opera House and Melbourne Recital Centre, and is ensemble-in-residence at the University of Technology, Sydney. As a soloist James has\u00a0played with the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, the Tasmanian Symphony\u00a0Orchestra, and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. He has performed as a\u00a0viola d\u2019amore soloist in festivals in Austria and Germany, and has been<br \/>invited to perform as guest principal viola with the Hong Kong Philharmonic\u00a0Orchestra. James was a prizewinner in the Australia\u2013New Zealand Viola\u00a0Society\u2019s International Competition and was a finalist in the Symphony\u00a0Australia Young Performers Awards. He has won the\u00a0ANAM\u00a0Concerto\u00a0Competition twice. Engagements in 2014 include performances with the\u00a0Renaissance Players, and with Sydney Chamber Opera as guest soloist and\u00a0orchestral leader. James is also undertaking doctoral\u00a0research into viola d\u2019amore practices of the 18th century at the University of\u00a0Sydney.
