It was not so long ago that we heard with heavy hearts, that the SBS Youth Orchestra was to be disbanded in 2013 after 25 very successful years of performing, touring and nurturing young musicians.<\/p>\n
Out of this ending though, came a new beginning with the formation of a new symphony orchestra for young musicians on Sydney’s lower north shore. \u00a0<\/p>\n
\u00a0Dr Antony Lau from the Doctors Orchestra and North Sydney Symphony Orchestra and\u00a0ex-SBSYO\u00a0conductor Thomas Tsai, who also teaches Cello at the Sydney\u00a0Conservatorium\u00a0of Music, have co-founded the North Sydney Youth Symphony Orchestra (NSYS) under the auspices of North Sydney Council.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The members of the\u00a0NSYS\u00a0also perform with the Sydney Youth Orchestra, the Australian Youth Orchestra, the Academy of Chamber Music Performance and Regional Orchestras in Newcastle , Canberra and Wollongong.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The\u00a0NSYS\u00a0commenced weekly rehearsals at the St Francis Xavier Church hall in early February, thanks to support from the North Sydney Catholic Parish, and has so far about 45 members signed up. The quality of playing has remained excellent, like its predecessor, the\u00a0SBSYO.\u00a0The\u00a0NSYS’s\u00a0first concert in May attracted an audience of over 300, at the Smith Auditorium at Shore School, North Sydney.\u00a0<\/p>\n
