Colours can be experienced as letters and numbers, hearing music can trigger smells or tastes, touch can stimulate vision. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Only 1 in 2000 people experience the phenomenon of \u2018synaesthesia\u2019. Leonard Bernstein, Duke Ellington, David Hockney,\u00a0Gy\u00f6rgy Ligeti, Franz Liszt,\u00a0Olivier Messiaen,\u00a0Marilyn Monroe,\u00a0Geoffrey Rush,\u00a0Vincent Van Gogh,\u00a0Stevie Wonder, Jan Sibelius and Lady Gaga are all renowned\u00a0synaesthetes.<\/p>\n<p>Following the very successful inaugural event <em>Synaesthesia: Music of Colour and Mind<\/em> at the Museum of Old and New Art in Tasmania in 2012, the concept returns in 2014 with\u00a0\u00a0SYNAESTHESIA+<em>,\u00a0<\/em>a collaboration between the Museum of Old and New Art and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra that takes visitors on a two-day journey through a private playground of music, colour and art. Directed by bass guitarist and curator Brian Ritchie and Marko Letonja,\u00a0Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Tasmanian Symphony, \u00a0SYNAESTHESIA+ will be an\u00a0experience\u00a0where music forms secret patterns in your mind and colours become an aural revelation; where a spectrum of visual, aural and culinary experiences gets you thinking about how you experience the sensory world around you.<b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will be a journey of play, exploration and private immersion,\u201d says\u00a0SYNAESTHESIA+\u00a0co-Artistic Director Brian Ritchie. \u201cMusicians will play old and new music as they move through MONA\u2019s galleries, sparking differing levels of counterpoint. They will perform with custom-designed lighting installations as multiple musical themes happening simultaneously across different spaces<b>.\u201d<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe\u00a0SYNAESTHESIA+\u00a0journey begins with a\u00a0special commission by Matthew Hindson, featuring 50 musicians from the TSO spread across MONA\u2019s subterranean levels and spaces,\u201d says TSO Chief Conductor and MONA Synaesthesia+ co-Artistic Director, Marko Letonja. \u201cIt will bring the entire museum into resonance in an unforgettable way before\u00a0Richard Tognetti immediately launches into one of 20<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century Romanian composer\u00a0Gy\u00f6rgy\u00a0Ligeti\u2019s fiendish difficult works.\u00a0Ligeti was himself a synaesthete.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Highlights include:<\/p>\n<p>The Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra conducted by\u00a0Marko Letonja<\/p>\n<p>Allison Bell \u2013 Schoenberg&#8217;s\u00a0<i>Pierrot Lunaire<\/i><\/p>\n<p>David Dolan and musicians from ANAM &#8211; Bach improvisation project<\/p>\n<p>Genevieve Lacey and the TSO performing\u00a0<i>Reinventions<\/i>\u00a0by Elena Kats-Chernin, and a solo show of music and lighting \u201cstrongly in the realm of the ecstatic\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael Goldschlager \u2013 selected Bach cello suites<\/p>\n<p>Michael Kieran Harvey \u2013 selection of Scriabin\u2019s solo piano works<\/p>\n<p>Richard Tognetti performing Ligeti and solo Bach, with oscilloscopic lighting by Robin Fox<\/p>\n<p>Steven Osborne \u2013 Messiaen\u2019s\u00a0<i>Vingt Regards sur l\u2019Enfant-Jesus <\/i>in 20 movements<\/p>\n<p>Tom Vincent trio in tribute to Thelonious Monk<\/p>\n<p>TSO Chorus performing Bach chorales.<\/p>\n<p>SYNAESTHESIA+\u00a0is a total saturation of senses, with music, art, and gastronomic\u00a0feasts created by MONA\u2019s decorated chefs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>BOOKINGS: The all-inclusive price (performance, food and drinks) is $250 per day or $450 for two days.
