The fall of the Berlin Wall laid bare to the west a previously undiscovered repository of information about the man about whom so little has been known.<\/p>\n<p>In 2013, Sir John Eliot Gardiner published his treatise on JS Bach, entitled<em> Music in the Castle of Heaven<\/em> ((Knopf).<em>\u00a0<\/em>Gardiner is well placed to present his views and expound his theories about Bach having studied and performed his works extensively. In the same year, Gardiner and his ensemble performed a Bach Marathon at London&#8217;s Royal Albert Hall; he undertook the extensive year-long Bach Cantata Pilgrimage tour which is also recorded as a set of 28 CDs.<\/p>\n<p>Admittedly,<em> Music in the Castle of Heaven<\/em> focuses on the choral works of Bach, which is after all, a genre of which Sir John Eliot Gardiner is master. However, the book has been\u00a0highly acclaimed by the critics. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2013\/oct\/30\/music-castle-heaven-js-bach-john-eliot-gardiner\">The Guardian<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/12\/04\/books\/bach-music-in-the-castle-of-heaven-by-john-eliot-gardiner.html?_r=0\">The New York Times<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/culture\/books\/artsandentertainmentbooksreview\/10397681\/Music-in-the-Castle-of-Heaven-by-John-Eliot-Gardiner-review.html\">The Telegraph,<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/entertainment\/books\/book-review-bach-music-in-the-castle-of-heaven-by-john-eliot-gardiner\/2013\/12\/23\/ac347e2c-55df-11e3-ba82-16ed03681809_story.html\">\u00a0The Washington Post)<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Amongst other topics, the book also triggered a debate on whether Bach the man was as inspiring and as brilliant as his music, or whether he was distinctly uninteresting as a person.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Peter Phillips, founder and conductor of the Tallis Scholars asserts the Bach could at times have been a &#8216;tedious old windbag&#8217; and explains his views in a recent article in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spectator.co.uk\/arts\/music\/9224851\/bach-could-be-a-tedious-old-windbag-so-dont-lets-deify-him\/\">The Spectator.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More than 250 years after his death, scholars of JS Bach continue to peel away the layers revealing new information and giving&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":16524,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[],"sls_format":[],"class_list":["post-16505","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news"],"acf":{"deck":"","is_featured":false,"media_type":"standard","audio_embed":"","video_url":""},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.2 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Was J S Bach A &#039;Tedious Old Windbag&#039;?
