The Australian String Quartet will perform European masterpieces in Sydney in August as part of its largest tour for 2014.<\/p>\n

Quartet members violinists Kristian Winther and Ioana Tache, violist Stephen King and cellist\u00a0Sharon Draper will perform a programme featuring three masterpieces from the\u00a0string quartet repertoire by Haydn, Beethoven and Bart\u00f3k performed on the quartet\u2019s rare and\u00a0exquisite set of Guadagnini instruments. Ahead of the concert is a pre-concert talk at 6.10pm.<\/p>\n

Haydn\u2019s String Quartet<\/em>\u00a0in G Major op 77 no 1<\/em>\u00a0is the grand, crowning achievement of a life inventing, exploring and\u00a0perfecting the genre. Regarded as the Father of the String Quartet’, Haydn wrote the work\u00a0towards the end of his career and it is widely considered to be among the finest examples of\u00a0string quartet writing.<\/p>\n

Written 10 years later around 1810, Beethoven\u2019s String Quartet op 95<\/em>\u00a0‘<\/em>Serioso’<\/em>\u00a0is among\u00a0the composer\u2019s shortest works for string quartet and is highly regarded for its intensity and tight\u00a0compositional structure.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Boundless<\/em> concert program concludes with The String Quartet No 5<\/em>\u00a0by the master of 20th\u00a0Century string quartets \u2013 B\u00e9la Bart\u00f3k. This piece is among Bart\u00f3k\u2019s most virtuosic works for the\u00a0genre and has been hailed as one of the ultimate challenges for string quartets since its first\u00a0performance in 1935.<\/p>\n

Describing the programme, ASQ violist Stephen King said the repertoire was \u201ca well\u2010balanced offering, covering classical,\u00a0romantic and 20th Century pieces.\u00a0The program celebrates the work of arguably some of the greatest European masters of string\u00a0quartet writing and we are looking forward to performing these works across Australia\u201d.<\/p>\n

The quartet will also present the Margaret River Weekend of Music from October 3\u20105.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Australian String Quartet \u00a0is the\u00a0Quartet\u2010in\u2010Residence at the University of Adelaide. \u00a0Established in 1985 it has had\u00a0a major impact on the musical life of Australia. The members of the ASQ are privileged to perform\u00a0on a matched set of Guadagnini instruments. Hand crafted by Giovanni Battista Guadagnini\u00a0between c.1743\u20101784 in Turin and Piacenza, Italy. The instruments are on loan to the Australian\u00a0String Quartet for their exclusive use through the generosity of Ulrike Klein, Maria Myers and a\u00a0group of donors who have supported Ngeringa Arts to acquire the viola.<\/p>\n
