It’s no easy task\u00a0to select music for a compilation CD. The list needs to include signature works or styles\u00a0of the performer, listener favourites, a smattering of less popular but respected works or composers, and finally, works that take the performer into the future.<\/p>\n

With her new CD “Seraphim”, <\/em>soprano Sara Macliver\u00a0achieves this\u00a0easily and the release is justifiably a “portrait” collection. Sara Macliver is one of Australia’s most eminent performers with a trans-continental career, specialising in\u00a0Baroque and early classical styles.\u00a0 It is reassuring therefore to hear her opening bracket which includes\u00a0Handel’s “Let the<\/em> Bright Seraphim”<\/em> (Samson HWV 57) and J S Bach’s “Mein glaubiges Herze”\u00a0( Cantata BWV 68).<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Separating these are arias by Arne\u00a0 (“The glitt’ring Sun” from Canata V The Morning) <\/em>and Giacomelli arr Vivaldi, (Sposa son disprettata” from Bajazet)<\/em>\u00a0before Macliver lights up the way through\u00a0more Baroque (J S Bach, Handel and Purcell) to the\u00a0 classical era with Giordano (Caro mio ben) <\/em>\u00a0Mozart (“Laudate Dominum”\u00a0 from Vesperae solennes de confessore KV 339 <\/em>and Ruhe Zanft <\/em>from Zaide KV 344 ) <\/em>and Haydn.<\/p>\n

After visiting the early Romantics Faure\u00a0(Pie Jesu <\/em>from Requiem opus 68)\u00a0, <\/em>Ravel, and Canteloube, Macliver pushes\u00a0into music theatre with Bernstein’s Somewhere <\/em>from West Side Story and a song from contemporary Australian composer Calvin Bowman (Crossing the bar). <\/em>The final song, Joni Mitchell’s Both Sides Now<\/em>\u00a0sums up what the collection hoped to achieve.<\/p>\n

When SoundsLikeSydney spoke to Sara Macliver about\u00a0Seraphim<\/em>, she acknowledged that “as a performer, it is the ultimate to be able to do a portrait disc with the ability to represent an array of styles, to show versatility and sing different genres”.<\/p>\n

This is especially interesting as her last CD was an anothology of arias solely by Mozart.\u00a0 Asked whether\u00a0the repertoire on Seraphim <\/em>represents a maturing and development of her voice, Macliver says ” Being able to sing Mozart really well is the ultimate test of a fine singer. There is a sense of musicality required,\u00a0and there are nuances and tonal colours which are challenging. In this recording, I sing music I’ver never performed before, like\u00a0\u00a0Somewhere<\/em>\u00a0 and Both Sides Now. <\/em>On the few occasions I’ve had the oportunity to sing jazz and blues with a big band,\u00a0there’s a\u00a0freedom and spontaneity that I’ve really enjoyed”.<\/p>\n

As for the performance – it sways from glittering colaratura (Handel, Purcell, J S Bach) through the\u00a0sheer beauty\u00a0of unerringly even\u00a0melodic line (Mozart, Ravel)\u00a0\u00a0and pure innocence\u00a0senza vibrato (<\/em>Giordano), to a more contemporary sound (Bernstein). In these performances Macliver is beautifully supported by\u00a0various Ausralian\u00a0orchestras, conductors and instrumental soloists on period instruments.<\/p>\n

The time line is one way of looking at this portrait CD. From \u00a0a different perspective it offers music from\u00a0various sacred forms, opera,\u00a0Italian Aria Antiche, recital reeprtoire,\u00a0\u00a0and theatre.<\/p>\n

Having had a taste of music theatre is there likely to be more from this genre? Macliver says “I’d love to sing more Sondheim”. From Seraphim to Sondheim – something to look forward to.<\/p>\n
