The extraordinary events of the 1914 Christmas Truce will be commemorated by Sydney Children’s\u00a0Choir and Gondwana National Choirs directed by Lyn Williams OAM, in Voices of Angels ‘Miracles’\u00a0<\/em>this December.<\/p>\n

The centenary of this remarkable event that witnessed the silencing of rifles along the Western Front\u00a0in exchange for seasonal goodwill will be celebrated in evocative performances of songs and carols\u00a0that momentarily united the warring sides.<\/p>\n

The concert will see the world premiere performance of Miracles<\/em> by\u00a0Australian composer Ross Edwards, commissioned especially for the occasion. In Miracles<\/em>, Edwards\u00a0has contrasted a sublime new setting for children\u2019s voices of the medieval Christmas text Quem\u00a0Vidistis<\/em>, with fragments of O Tannenbau<\/em>m – one of the carols sung during the truce – and sung in the concert by\u00a0an ensemble of young men close in age to the youngest soldiers in the trenches.<\/p>\n

Artistic Director Lyn Williams OAM observes \u2018The program of Voices of Angels \u2018Miracles\u2019<\/em> has captured the hearts of all the young performers
involved with an intensity which I have never seen before. The power and beauty of their singing will\u00a0enable us to reach back one hundred years and experience this remarkable moment of peace in the\u00a0midst of conflict.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n

Gondwana Choirs celebrates\u00a0its 25th year in 2014. The organisation was founded by Artistic Director Lyn Williams OAM\u00a0as the Sydney Children\u2019s Choir in 1989 and has grown to include Gondwana National Choirs and\u00a0Gondwana National Indigenous Children\u2019s Choirs. In addition to extensive national and international\u00a0touring, all three arms of the organisation have come together on several occasions, most notably in\u00a0July this year with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra for the world premiere performances of\u00a0Jandamarra \u2013 Sing for the Country<\/em> by Paul Stanhope.<\/p>\n
