{"id":17951,"date":"2015-01-13T10:43:30","date_gmt":"2015-01-12T23:43:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/?p=17951"},"modified":"2015-01-13T10:43:30","modified_gmt":"2015-01-12T23:43:30","slug":"the-sound-of-burning-water-electronica-drums-garden-slate-and-knitting-needles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/?p=17951","title":{"rendered":"The Sound Of Burning Water &#8211; Electronica, Drums, Garden Slate And Knitting Needles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-17952\" alt=\"download\" src=\"https:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/download.jpg\" width=\"311\" height=\"162\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Percussionist Claire Edwardes presents <em>About an Hour<\/em> solo recital titled <em>The Sound of Burning Water<\/em>\u00a0as part of the Sydney Festival.<\/p>\n<p>The performance tracks 25 years of solo percussion &#8211; &#8220;the gems in my view!&#8221; says Edwardes, and features a world premiere.<\/p>\n<p>Describing the line-up, she explains &#8220;I will open and close the show with Xenakis&#8217;s visceral classic\u00a0<em>Rebonds<\/em>\u00a0(my favourite percussion solo of all time) and in between there will be 4 unique and contrasting solo&#8217;s with electronics. Firstly Damien Ricketson&#8217;s organic\u00a0<em>Time Alone<\/em>\u00a0for vibraphone, which I recently premiered as part of The Secret Noise (and features Damien on live electronics), then <em>Temazcal<\/em>\u00a0for solo maracas and electronics,\u00a0which is at once visually entertaining and aurally rich, and then my new arrangement of Steve Reich&#8217;s classic\u00a0<em>Vermont<\/em> <em>Counterpoint<\/em>\u00a0in which the lush layering of repeated patterns on vibraphone and xylophone (12 in total, that I recorded in the studio earlier in the year) leads to a wholly immersive listening experience.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The world premiere on the program is a two movement piece called <em>Work<\/em> and is a collaboration between Marcus Whale and Tom Smith, commissioned by \u00a0Edwardes for the Sydney Festival and made possible by a grant from the Australia Council. The first movement is simply for drum set up and electronica and the second, is for a single piece of garden slate and some knitting needles.&#8221;\u00a0I think their latest collaboration is extremely rich electronica&#8221; says Edwardes.
