Ravel\u2019s sparkling Introduction and Allegro<\/em> with its spectacular harp writing makes for a glorious\u00a0start to this program, featuring guest artist Alice Giles.<\/p>\n

At the core of this program is Scottish composer James MacMillan\u2019s mystical and hypnotic song\u00a0cycle Raising Sparks<\/em> for mezzo-soprano and ensemble. A setting of ecstatic religious poetry, the\u00a0Australia Ensemble will be joined by Fiona Campbell to perform this spiritual\u00a0journey of creation through to redemption.<\/p>\n

Alice also joins the Ensemble for the pastoral\u00a0serenity of English composer Arnold Bax\u2019s Quintet for harp and strings<\/em>, which blends Impressionism with elements of late Romanticism and in an unmistakably unique compositional\u00a0voice.<\/p>\n

Complementing the French theme of the opening work, Faur\u00e9\u2019s Piano Trio in D minor<\/em> is a\u00a0late masterpiece written almost twenty years after the Ravel, and in the year before Faur\u00e9 died. At\u00a0times austere but always astute, this music displays the formal freedom and profound insight of his\u00a0late Romantic style.\u00a0<\/p>\n
