Celebrated tenor Jonas Kaufmann sings the role of the\u00a0poet embroiled in the politics of the French revolution in The Royal Opera\u2019s production of \u00a0Umberto Giordano’s opera\u00a0Andrea Ch\u00e9nier<\/em>, captured live in high-definition from the stage of London\u2019s Covent\u00a0Garden in January and screening in Australian cinemas in February\/March.<\/p>\n

Conducted by Antonio Pappano and directed by David McVicar, the new\u00a0production for the Royal Opera is a fictionalised account of the life of Ch\u00e9nier, opening\u00a0during the opulence of pre-revolutionary France and coming to its climatic end in the\u00a0final days of the \u2018Reign of Terror\u2019.\u00a0The performance also features Australian baritone Peter Coleman-Wright as\u00a0Pietro Fl\u00e9ville.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Andrea Ch\u00e9nier<\/em>,\u00a0is famed for its challenging tenor role and demanding arias including the famous tenor aria\u00a0Un d\u00ec all’azzuro spazio<\/em>, also known as\u00a0L’improvviso\u00a0<\/em>and the soprano aria\u00a0La mamma morta.<\/em><\/p>\n

The story begins in 1789 at a lavish winter garden party in Paris where Chenier falls in\u00a0love with the beautiful aristocratic Maddalena, sung by Dutch soprano Eva-Maria\u00a0Westbroek. Six years later Maddalena has lost everything and France has descended\u00a0into a city consumed by suspicion and fear. Condemned by a revolutionary love rival\u00a0G\u00e9rard, sung by the outstanding Serbian baritone \u017deljko Lu\u010di\u0107, the fateful couple reunite to face the\u00a0barbaric \u2018Revolutionary Trial\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Not seen at Covent\u00a0Garden since 1985, Giordano’s powerful and moving opera is staged to great\u00a0visual effect from the sumptuous palace of the Countess of Coigny\u00a0<\/i>to the drab streets of Paris swathed in the tricolor.\u00a0<\/p>\n
