On the programme\u00a0is music\u00a0by\u00a0Mozart (<em>String Quartet no 15 in D minor, K421<\/em>), Australian composer Ian Munro (String Quartet no 1, <em>From an Exhibition <\/em><em><em>of Australian Woodcuts<\/em><\/em> (2009),<br \/>\nRenaissance pieces by Orlando Gibbons and William Byrd,\u00a0Beethoven (<em>String Quartet no 16 in F major, op 135 and number 15 in A minor opus 132) and Haydn (String Quartet in D minor, op 103 Chorale: <em>Der Greis<\/em>, Hob.XXVc:5)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A sense of curiosity has taken this chamber ensemble\u00a0to present music that pre-dates the appearance of the string quartet as\u00a0a musical\u00a0entity.\u00a0 It is unusual to hear the music of Byrd and Gibbons played by\u00a0two violins, viola and cello!\u00a0It will indeed be an intriguing experience,\u00a0delivered by\u00a0elite alumni of the Juillard School of Music who have had the benefit and good fortune of\u00a0 nearly 20 years of continuous collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>The Brentano String Quartet is the inaugural \u00a0String Quartet in Residence at Princeton University, with an array of international awards and tours to their name. Wisely or not, their early ambitions were driven by a vow of poverty,\u00a0 and a \u00a0pledge to rehearse hard and play to the best of their ability. No doubt many aspiring musicians espouse these ideals &#8211; some of them with little choice. In the case of the Brentano String Quartet, these ideals have served them well and brought to us, their audiences\u00a0performances of\u00a0 intelligence, skill\u00a0and sensitivity.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-1861\" href=\"https:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/shows\/brentano-fires-up-string-quartet-programming\/1828.html\/attachment\/brentano_antonia2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1861\" title=\"brentano_antonia2\" src=\"https:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/brentano_antonia2-100x100.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>Who, by the way, was Brentano? Antonie Brentano was once\u00a0thought to have been the woman to whom Beethoven wrote an anonymous love letter -&#8221; The Immortal Beloved&#8221;\u00a0. Johann Josefa Antonie Edle von Brikenstock was born in Vienna in May 1780,\u00a0the\u00a0only daughter of\u00a0\u00a0noted &#8220;scholar, connoisseur and statesman&#8221; Johann Melchoir Edler von Birkenstock and his wife Carolina Josefa von Hay. Antonie, as she was known was educated in an Ursuline convent and when she was 17, given in marriage to a prosperous merchant from Frankfurt, Franz Brentano. They\u00a0had 6 children and dedicated their lives to philanthropy and supporting the arts, with Goethe and\u00a0the Brothers Grimm amongst the recipients of their benevolence.
