Among the numerous tributes marking this year’s 100th<\/sup> anniversary of the ANZAC landing on Turkish shores at Gallipoli,\u00a0The Song Company\u2019s symbolic program, Lamentations for a Soldier<\/i>, captures the essence of the ANZAC spirit.<\/p>\n

Lamentations for a Soldier<\/i> features Turkish brothers Ekrem and O\u011fuz M\u00fclayim as guest composer and guest artist. O\u011fuz plays the Turkish flute, or ney<\/em> as it is traditionally known, forming the anchor of the programme.<\/p>\n

Contrasting with traditional Turkish Sufi music performed by O\u011fuz, and a premiere of a new composition by Ekrem, the six voices of The Song Company <\/i>will perform Robert White\u2019s beautiful setting of the Biblical Lamentations <\/i>written in the late 16th<\/sup> century, blending the music of East and West as they celebrate the dignity of human life.<\/p>\n

Ekrem M\u00fclayim is a Sydney-based composer who has collaborated with prominent theatres, arts organisations and ensembles and has had his compositions performed around the world. His brother O\u011fuz started his music studies in 1993 and has performed as both a chorister and ney<\/em> player in some of the most important concert halls of Istanbul.<\/p>\n

At a time when the tragic events of Gallipoli and the immense losses on the Western front 100 years ago are remembered, this collaboration of East and West offers a symbolic gesture of unification. Roland Peelman, the Song Company\u2019s outgoing artistic director observes\u00a0\u201cIn uniting the singers with two Turkish musicians, we are delving into our respective traditions, creating work that we can share.\u201d<\/p>\n
