Steven Isserlis and Connie Shih<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The legendary cellist Steven Isserlis is joined by brilliant young Canadian pianist\u00a0Connie Shih on his fourth tour for Musica Viva,\u00a0presenting works by four great composers united by their love of all things French.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The programme commences with Saint-Sa\u00ebns\u2019 first cello sonata, a wild and dramatic work with a gripping opening that gives way to passionate storms and voyages.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s one of his best chamber pieces, I believe,\u201d says Isserlis. \u201cIt\u2019s very strong and there\u2019s also an interesting story about him originally composing it. His mother heard it at the last moment and said it wasn\u2019t good enough. Saint-Sa\u00ebns was absolutely devastated, because his mother was everything to him, and he shut himself away for two days to produce a second version, which is the better of the two.\u201d<\/p>\n

The second sonata on the program, written by Saint-Sa\u00ebns\u2019 student and compatriot Faur\u00e9, is a late work noted for its beautiful, funereal slow movement and sparkling, optimistic ending.\u00a0\u201cFaur\u00e9 was very, very frail when he wrote this piece, and completely deaf, but he just created this amazing world of joy,\u201d says Isserlis. \u201cThere is tragedy as well, but basically the overwhelming impression one gets from this sonata is joy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thomas Ad\u00e8s work, the evocative Lieux Retrouv\u00e9s (Remembered Places)<\/em>, was written especially for Isserlis, with the composer seizing the opportunity to push some limits.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s so incredibly hard!\u201d says Isserlis of Lieux Retrouv\u00e9s<\/em>. \u201cIt\u2019s probably the hardest thing I\u2019ve ever played in my life. But it\u2019s fun \u2013 it\u2019s a romp.\u201d<\/p>\n

The final piece, Cesar Franck\u2019s Sonata, was a marriage gift for the famous musician Eug\u00e8ne Ysa\u00ffe and finishes with peals of bells \u2013 a wonderful way to end a concert.<\/p>\n
