{"id":18945,"date":"2015-07-30T17:07:46","date_gmt":"2015-07-30T07:07:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/?p=18945"},"modified":"2015-07-30T17:07:46","modified_gmt":"2015-07-30T07:07:46","slug":"songs-of-rest-the-choir-of-st-james-with-the-australian-haydn-ensemble","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/?p=18945","title":{"rendered":"Songs Of Rest &#8211; The Choir Of St James&#8217; With The Australian Haydn Ensemble"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-18946\" alt=\"download\" src=\"https:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/download-325x153.jpg\" width=\"325\" height=\"153\" \/><\/div>\n<div>The Choir of St James\u2019 directed by Warren Trevelyan-Jones and the Australian Haydn Ensemble led by Artistic Director Skye McIntosh\u00a0join forces once again after their marvellous collaborative performance of Mozart\u2019s\u00a0<em>Requiem<\/em>\u00a0in 2014, to present \u00a0<em>Songs of Rest<\/em> &#8211; a programme featuring Joseph Haydn\u2019s\u00a0<em>Missa brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo<\/em>, the \u2018Little Organ Mass\u2019, and the\u00a0<em>Requiem in C minor<\/em>\u00a0by his brother Michael Haydn.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>Michael Haydn\u2019s\u00a0<em>Requiem in C minor<\/em>\u00a0made a profound impression on the young Mozart and is seen by many as the model for the latter\u2019s last great composition. Mozart and his father Leopold in fact both performed in the orchestra for the debut of this work. The piece resonates with the grief and despair felt by the composer over the loss of his only daughter, Aloisia, but ultimately resounds with consolation.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<br \/>The charming <em>Little Organ Mass<\/em>\u00a0by Michael\u2019s older brother and \u00a0Joseph Haydn, the composer from whom the Australian Haydn Ensemble takes its name, earned its nickname from the exceptional <em>obbligato<\/em> organ writing in the beautiful solo soprano movement that is the <em>Benedictus<\/em>. This performance will feature historical keyboard specialist Neal Peres Da Costa.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>William Byrd\u2019s poignant lament\u00a0<em>Infelix ego<\/em>\u00a0is an epic Renaissance work considered to be his masterpiece, and completes the setting for this tranquil concert.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>The Programme:\u00a0F.J.
