\u201cWell may we say \u2018God Save The Queen\u2019, because nothing will save the Governor General!\u201d Whoever thought that\u00a0Whitlam could be made to in a waltz?!\u00a0Forty\u00a0years after Gough Whitlam made this famous proclamation, the phrase has been turned into a waltz which will be performed at the Australia Ensemble@UNSW’s concert Big Decisions<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Composer and double bass player Robert Davidson provides us\u00a0with a witty and delightful series of thoughts on power and politics in his ensemble piece with video\u00a0in what is a first for Australia Ensemble audiences…….and what is a waltz without an accompanying\u00a0tango? Paul Keating gets a bit of a serve in a new version of the Keating Tangos.<\/p>\n

Politics and power are darker notions, however, when we consider the music of Dmitry Shostakovich.\u00a0The glorious Cello Sonata<\/em> of 1934 was written just before his censure by the Soviet Cultural office\u00a0for his opera Lady Macbeth of Mtensk<\/em> and at a time of personal turmoil which seems to heighten\u00a0the expressive power of this music. Beethoven too had a Russian connection, namely with Prince\u00a0Razumovsky, an amateur violinist of some repute and commissioner of three of Beethoven\u2019s most\u00a0famous quartets, the third of which will form the centrepiece for this program.<\/p>\n
