{"id":2024,"date":"2011-05-24T17:32:19","date_gmt":"2011-05-24T07:32:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/?p=2024"},"modified":"2011-05-24T17:32:19","modified_gmt":"2011-05-24T07:32:19","slug":"serious-singing-from-teddy-tahu-rhodes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/?p=2024","title":{"rendered":"serious singing from teddy tahu rhodes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-2213\" href=\"https:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/music-and-videos\/serious-singing-from-teddy-tahu-rhodes\/2024.html\/attachment\/ttr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2213\" title=\"ttr\" src=\"https:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/ttr-100x100.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe poem has not been completed until set to music\u201d \u2013 Goethe.<\/p>\n<p>If Art Song needs to be re-invented to survive and evolve, the new\u00a0CD &#8220;Serious Songs&#8221; \u00a0from bass-baritone Teddy Tahu Rhodes (ABC Classics 476-4383) points in the right direction.<\/p>\n<p>The CD takes its title from Brahms&#8217; <em>Four Serious Songs,<\/em>originally composed for bass and piano, and given a new guise by the German Detlev Glanert (b 1960). \u00a0Glanert has written extensively for the voice, and his orchestral setting of this quartet of\u00a0songs is sensitive with the added innovation of four preludes and a postlude interspersed with the songs. (See our link to an interview of Glanert on his orchestration of Brahms&#8217; <em>Four Serious Songs).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In this spirit of presenting a different perspective, the opening track is Schubert&#8217;s <em>Erl Konig<\/em>orchestrated by Reger.\u00a0 It\u2019s repeated later in the recording in its original version, along with three other Schubert Lieder (<em>An die Musik, D547, Die Forelle D 550,<\/em> and <em>Die Taubenpost D 957). <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Both re-interpretations stay true to Fischer \u2013Dieskau\u2019s basic tenet of Lieder that\u201dthe accompaniment is an integral part of the composition\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also on this CD, excerpts from Brahms&#8217; <em>Ein Deutsche Requiem opus 45, <\/em>which should please fans of choral music for its choral content and Samuel Barber&#8217;s opus 3 <em>Dover Beach, <\/em>text <em>by Matthew<\/em> Arnold.<\/p>\n<p>There is potential for melancholy when listening to this recording. \u00a0<em>Die Taubenpost <\/em>and <em>An die Musik,<\/em> are the only notes of optimism in a collection that is otherwise pensive and ominous. Even Barber was diagnosed with depression in later life \u2013 though Dover Beach was written when he was just 21. \u00a0The mix of old and new settings, the inclusion of\u00a0 the chorus, the variation in accompaniments \u2013 orchestral, piano and chamber \u2013 and Rhodes\u2019 own towering performance defray this risk.<\/p>\n<p>There is something singular about the way German text sits in the bass \u2013 baritone voice and in the way the German\/Austrian Romantics set the text to music. It is always a thrill to listen to Teddy Tahu Rhodes. Seriousness is a real emotion and an inescapable part of our\u00a0 lives. To channel it through the pleasure of music and Rhodes\u2019 singing is ultimately a propitious way of immortalizing this music.<\/p>\n<p>Featured track: \u00a0Franz Schubert <em>An die Musik, D547 , <\/em>Teddy Tahu Rhodes, bass-baritone, Kristian Chong, piano.
