From Handel and Bach to contemporary works by Latvia\u2019s Peteris Vasks and Australia\u2019s Iain\u00a0Grandage, the Sydney Chamber Choir is presenting Dixit Dominus<\/em>, a joyous plethora of prayers to life, love, nature, courage and hope.<\/p>\n

Leading choral conductor, Jonathan Grieves-\u00adSmith, Chorus Master of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chorus and, more recently,\u00a0Director of Music at Trinity College, University of Melbourne,\u00a0will guest conduct the choir in\u00a0collaboration with the Orchestra of the Antipodes for this special one-\u00adoff concert. The Orchestra of the Antipodes is well-\u00adknown for its expertise on\u00a0period instruments and regular appearances with \u00a0Pinchgut Opera.<\/p>\n

Composer and performer Iain Grandage, famed for his many Australian collaborations across\u00a0theatre, cabaret, musicals, soloists and ensembles, will hear the world premiere of his choral work\u00a0inspired by \u00a0Chris Wallace-\u00adCrabbe\u2019s poem, Why do we exist?<\/em>\u00a0about a boy\u2019s wonderment in an\u00a0Australian garden. Two choir \u00a0patrons commissioned Grandage to write this in celebration of their son\u2019s marriage.<\/p>\n

The concert also includes the Australian premiere \u00a0of Prayer<\/em> by celebrated Latvian composer Peteris\u00a0Vasks, an ecstatic homage to the power of love to overcome despair \u00a0on the streets of Calcutta,\u00a0drawing on the prayers of Mother Teresa. Vasks\u2019 frequently performed choral and \u00a0instrumental\u00a0works often allude to the impact of Russian repression in the Baltic, on man and nature.<\/p>\n

Handel\u2019s \u00a0dazzling hymn Dixit Dominus<\/em>, written when in Italy aged just 21, gives\u00a0this program its title. Also on the programme is J S Bach\u2019s early cantata Christ lag in Todesbanden<\/em>\u00a0BWV 4,<\/em> where at just 22, Bach explores the mystery of life and \u00a0death in intricate counterpoint and soaring melody.<\/p>\n
