The Sydney Youth Orchestra conducted by Max McBride with soloist Stuart Rynn on percussion, presents The Triumphant Hero, <\/em>featuring music by Sibelius, Weber and Paul Creston.<\/p>\n For the first time, the SYO Concerto Competition features a prize which includes a performance with the Sydney Youth Orchestra and a trip to London to further the winner\u2019s musical and instrumental studies. Percussionist Stuart Rynn triumphed in the heats and finals of this competition at the end of 2015, and stars in this performance of Paul Creston’s Concertino for Marimba and Orchestra<\/em> (1940). Stuart is in his final year of a Bachelor of Music degree at the University of New South Wales, studying percussion with Leigh Giles from Synergy.<\/p>\n A composer with ideas and invention, Creston wrote this Concertino<\/em> to demonstrate the capabilities of the marimba as a solo instrument with orchestral accompaniment. It is a piece of music of inherent musical interest.<\/p>\n Sibelius\u2019<\/strong> Fifth Symphony<\/em> is perhaps his most popular. It has an epic quality, a sweep and grandeur that triumphs over transient anxiety to celebrate the heroic, optimistic power of life.<\/p>\n For over 43 years, SYO has been a vital part of the cultural life of Australia, training thousands of young musicians who take their place in orchestras throughout Australia and the world. SYO has a strong track record of educating professional musicians at all levels and its annual program has grown to encompass 11 ensembles, with nearly 500 young musicians aged 6-25 years, in a weekly program of rehearsals, specialised tutorials and performances.<\/p>\n SYO alumni are placed in all of the professional orchestras in Australia, leading chamber ensembles such as the Goldner Quartet, Australia Ensemble, Ensemble Offspring and the Omega Ensemble, as well as orchestras internationally, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Halle Orchestra, Bayerische Staatsoper, and Hong Kong Philharmonic.<\/p>\n Conductor Max McBride studied double bass with Ludwig Streicher and conducting with Otmar Suitner. He has worked with professional orchestras in Australia, including the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Queensland and Adelaide Symphony Orchestras as well as the Victoria State Orchestra.
