Later this year,\u00a0he\u2019ll undertake a different\u00a0winter&#8217;s journey of sorts, and move to London where he will\u00a0undertake a Master&#8217;s\u00a0degree\u00a0at the Royal\u00a0College of Music. Unlike <em>Winterriese<\/em>, this journey is about the ascent of a career rather than the descent\u00a0into despair.\u00a0One of the best aspects of\u00a0 the ascent is that\u00a0he\u00a0has won a full scholarship\u00a0to further his studies.<\/p>\n<p>The 90 minute song cycle is performed without a break. Pearse, 22, chose this seminal\u00a0work for its landmark status in the\u00a0Art Song\u00a0repertoire. &#8220;The stories are phenomenal, the music\u00a0gives scope for textual expression,\u00a0and\u00a0the piano comes into its own\u00a0&#8211; all creating a perfect partenrship&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p>Frequently performed and recorded by the greats, a young singer needs to present their own perspective in addition to the musical, textual and technical challenges. Pearse intends not to compete with others, but to take his own experiences into his interpretation. Coincidentally, the legendary Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau was 22 when he made the first of 7 studio recordings of<em>\u00a0Winterreise. <\/em>(There are numerous live recordings as well).\u00a0\u00a0Pearse nominates performances by Fischer-Dieskau, Peter Schreier and Thomas Quasthoff as having influenced him.<\/p>\n<p>Pearse acknowledges that a career\u00a0 including opera as well as Art Song would be ideal, though it is a\u00a0well known\u00a0phenomenon that Art Song is less well funded and draws fewer audiences than opera. Yet, it is more intimate and therein lies thet challenge \u2013 \u201cArt song unlike opera, is not about creating someone different.
