Sydney choral ensemble Bel a cappella\u00a0under the direction of their Musical Director\u00a0Anthony Pasquill\u00a0 is proud to present its first concert of its 2018 subscription series, To the Hands<\/em>. Its highlights include Gabriel Faur\u00e9\u2019s Requiem<\/em> and music by American composer Caroline Shaw.<\/p>\n

This concert marks the\u00a0Australian premiere of Pulitzer Prize winner Caroline Shaw’s composition To the Hands, <\/em>which\u00a0<\/em>begins and ends with strains of Buxtehude\u2019s Ad manus<\/em>\u00a0from his composition Membra Jesu Nostra<\/em>, with small harmonic and melodic references throughout.<\/p>\n

The structure of Johann Sebastian Bach\u2019s Partita in D minor for solo violin<\/em> puzzled commentators for centuries: why, besides the standard sequence of baroque dance-forms, did Bach then add the\u00a0chaconne<\/em>? The German scholar Professor Helga Thoene suggests that the work commemorates the composer\u2019s first wife, Maria Barbara with funereal Lutheran melodies are woven into the music. For this special version, the choir is joined by violinist Gemma Lee (2017 Sydney Symphony Orchestra Violin Fellow<\/em>).<\/p>\n

Faure\u0301\u2019s Requiem,<\/em> in the same funereal key of D minor, follows the chaconne seamlessly. This scaled-down version of Faure\u0301\u2019s masterwork for choir, string quintet and organ, underlines the work\u2019s quiet individuality and restraint.<\/p>\n

As Faure\u0301 himself put it, \u2018someone has called it a lullaby of death. But that\u2019s how I see death: as an aspiration towards happiness above, rather than as a painful experience\u2019<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Bel a cappella have two other concerts in its 2018 series, Salve Regina<\/em> in August and Threshold of Night in November.<\/em> They are also embarking on their second European Tour in May this year to Germany, Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland.<\/p>\n
