The Marais Project presents A Bass Affair<\/em> – music for bass viol and bass violin.\u00a0For this concert, founding artistic director Jennifer Eriksson welcomes to the ensemble, Tim Blomfield, one of Australia\u2019s finest bass violinists and co-founder of Sydney\u2019s long standing and highly respected early music ensemble, Salut! Baroque.<\/p>\n

Early music fans may be aware that the viola da gamba is also known as the bass viol. It is less well known, perhaps, that there is also such an instrument as the bass violin, also known as the \u2018basse de violon\u2019. The bass viol and bass violin were mainstays in French baroque music and featured in the Court orchestra of King Louis XIV. The Sunday afternoon program will feature a cantata by Mont\u00e9clair, music by Marais \u2013 with the bass violin providing the continuo – and other works that show off the complementary and contrasting aspects of the two instruments.<\/p>\n

Tim and Jennifer first met when they were students at the Sydney Conservatorium. Both went on to study with Dutch virtuoso gambist and baroque cellist, Jaap ter Linden. Although Jenny has performed on several occasions with Salut! Baroque, this will be Tim\u2019s first guest appearance with The Marais Project.\u00a0Jennifer and Timothy are joined by soprano Josie Ryan and long term Marais Project lutenist, Tommie Andersson, in what will be a delightful and varied program of music from the French baroque.<\/p>\n
