One of the foremost violinists of our generation,\u00a0Ray Chen is no ordinary violinist. Born in Taiwan and raised in Brisbane, he moved to the USA at 15 to pursue intensive violin studies at the Curtis Institute of Music. Since then, his appearances as a soloist with great orchestras around the world\u00a0have carved his niche as a heart-stopping virtuoso.\u00a0Ray Chen returns to Australia to tour nationally for Musica Viva\u00a0with pianist Julien Quentin in\u00a0two programs of violin masterworks and a world premiere by\u00a0Matthew Hindson AM.<\/p>\n

With millions of social media followers, a partnership with Giorgio Armani and a spot in the 2017\u00a0Forbes list of 30 most influential Asians under 30, his extraordinary talents take him well beyond the bounds of classical music.<\/p>\n

Named \u2018one to watch\u2019 by The Strad and Gramophone magazines, the 29-year-old burst onto the global scene a decade ago, winning the Yehudi Menuhin Competition in 2008 and the Queen Elisabeth\u00a0Competition in 2009.\u00a0 Other standouts in a daunting list of achievements include performances at France\u2019s Bastille\u00a0Day (live to 800,000 people), the Nobel Prize Concert in Stockholm,\u00a0the BBC Proms and the Japan Winter Olympics. He plays the 1715\u00a0\u2018Joachim\u2019 Stradivarius violin on loan from the Nippon Music Foundation\u00a0\u2013 an instrument once owned by the famed Hungarian violinist, Joseph\u00a0Joachim.<\/p>\n

Ray has just released his first Decca album \u2013 The Golden Age,<\/em> a \u201ctip of the hat to the era of my\u00a0favourite violinists; Oistrakh, Heifetz, Kreisler, Milstein \u2013 you name it\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

On his return to Australia, he\u2019s joined by his regular playing partner, acclaimed French pianist Julien Quentin. The two musicians met in 2011 \u2013 \u201crelatively early\u201d in the young violinist\u2019s career \u2013 in a castle in Germany, during a seven-day residency featuring different soloists.<\/p>\n

The duo will perform two programs on this tour \u2013 the first showcasing\u00a0works by Beethoven, Grieg, Falla, Monti, and a world premiere by Australia\u2019s own Matthew Hindson AM; the second programme pairs the Hindson\u00a0with favourites by Vitali, Franck, Ysa\u00ffe and Ravel.<\/p>\n

Ray has put much thought into the Hindson work: \u201cIt\u2019s called \u2018Dark Matter\u2019 which alludes to the term used in\u00a0astrophysics to describe the matter that makes up the majority of the universe,\u201d he explains. \u201cIt\u2019s everywhere\u00a0and dates back to the Big Bang and yet here we are 13 billion years later (give or take a few) trying to see it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is also a second meaning to the piece which is that the dark matter of the universe could be perceived\u00a0as a metaphor for our existence,\u201d he continues. \u201cWe as human beings are on this planet for such a relatively short amount\u00a0of time, what is the point? It\u2019s basically the \u2018What is the meaning of life?\u2019 question we ask ourselves. Matthew points out\u00a0that perhaps our lasting legacy is the things we can\u2019t see ourselves – rather it\u2019s the memories others hold of us. It\u2019s an honor\u00a0to present such a meaningful and thoughtful piece. I hope audiences will enjoy it!\u201d<\/p>\n

Ray will also mentor talented students at masterclasses in Brisbane, Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney, while Julien will\u00a0give masterclasses in Newcastle and Melbourne. Members of the public are welcome to attend.<\/p>\n
