Sydney chanteuse Nadia Piave presents her annual\u00a0Cancionero<\/em>\u00a0concert, Cancionero Iberico 2018:\u00a0Pe\u00f1a!<\/em> celebrating\u00a0the life and songs of the great Victor Jara and his circle,\u00a0Violetta Parra,\u00a0Horacio Salinas\u00a0and\u00a0Pablo\u00a0Neruda.<\/p>\n

This year’s audience is treated to readings from Neruda’s most\u00a0evocative love poetry and the\u00a0Canto General,<\/em>\u00a0and is once again accompanied by an ensemble of fans of the Chilean\u00a0nueva cancion. <\/em>This\u00a0concert of poetry and song\u00a0 is on the eve of the anniversary of the events in Chile on September 11, 1973.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0Pe\u00f1a<\/em>\u00a0is a meeting place or grouping of musicians or artists. In Chile the term came to mean a popular venue, just like Django, where folk music\u00a0was played and simple (but delicious!)\u00a0food and drink were available. It was in the pe\u00f1as of Santiago del Chile in the 1960s that\u00a0the song form known as\u00a0Nueva Cancion<\/em>\u00a0was born, and\u00a0some of the main exponents of the style were musicians such as Violetta Parra, Victor Jara and the groups Inti-Illimani and Quilapayun. The concept of a Pe\u00f1a, like the music of these musicians,\u00a0is inextricably linked to a sense of social justice and grassroots culture.<\/p>\n

The performers: Nadia Piave \u2013 voice\/\u00a0Pino Scuro – recitador\/\u00a0Tina Marsden\u00a0\u2013\u00a0flute\/\u00a0Tara Hashambhoy – viola\/\u00a0Gino Pengue, Robert Clancy\u00a0\u2013 guitars\/\u00a0Luke Robinson – percussion<\/p>\n
