Performing with the choir are cellist Christopher Pidcock and violist Heather Lloyd.<\/p>\n<p>Walt Whitman&#8217;s declamation\u00a0<em>Behold \u2013 the Sea! <\/em>is from his poem\u00a0<em>Leaves of Grass<\/em>, set by Ralph Vaughan-Williams in his <em>Sea Symphony<\/em>.\u00a0Opening with Jaakko M\u00e4ntyj\u00e4rvi\u2019s stirring requiem to the hundreds drowned in the 1994 sinking of the passenger ferry Estonia, Sydney Chamber Choir\u00a0will be joined by the Wollongong vocal ensemble, <em>con voci<\/em>, for a repeat performance at the Church of the Mall, Wollongong, on Sunday October 7 at 3pm.<\/p>\n<p><em>Behold \u2013 the Sea!<\/em>\u00a0includes Cecilia McDowall\u2019s choral homage to Harriet Quimby, the first woman to fly across the English Channel in 1912, just a day after the sinking of the Titanic and Peter Sculthorpe\u2019s\u00a0<em>The stars turn,<\/em> a\u00a0tribute in song to James Cook\u2019s commanding voyage to follow the transit of Venus.<\/p>\n<p>Alice Eather, the young Maningrida teacher and activist who took her life last year, is remembered in a new work by well-known composer and singer Dan Walker, based on her poem <em>Y\u00faya Karrab\u00fara (Fire in Burning<\/em>) a plea for reconciliation and against mining the coasts of Arnhem Land.\u00a0The work was commissioned by the Choir\u2019s former President, and Walker&#8217;s, fellow chorister Ed Suttle, whose son, Dave, worked closely with Alice Eather.<\/p>\n<p>The program also features James MacMillan\u2019s\u00a0<em>Strathclyde Motets<\/em>, which draws on a Scottish region renowned for shipbuilding, as well as premiering in Australia, Nicolas Campion\u2019s classic psalm, <em>De profundis<\/em>. \u00a0From the depths to the stars, this expansive program ends in peace with the last farewell to the departed, <em>In paradisum<\/em> by the Latvian composer \u0112riks E\u0161envalds.<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan Grieves-Smith is artistic director of professional choir Hallelujah Junction and of the Hamer Singers, and is acclaimed for his 17-years of outstanding leadership of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chorus.<\/p>\n<p>Tickets from $50 ($45, $25)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityrecitalhall.com\">Bookings<\/a>\u00a0or call (02) 8256 2222<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sydney Chamber Choir embarks on Behold \u2013 the Sea!\u00a0a choral voyage through maritime disaster, epic adventure, revelation, island magic and a reverence&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":25300,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[],"sls_format":[],"class_list":["post-25299","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-shows"],"acf":{"deck":"","is_featured":false,"media_type":"standard","audio_embed":"","video_url":""},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.2 -
