Celebrating 20 years of performing, promoting, recording and curating new music, Halcyon\u2019s last program for 2018, Shining Shores,<\/em> collects pieces inspired by the natural elements of water and moonlight. Taking time to reflect on the world around us, we wander beside the flowing Seine in Rosalind Page\u2019s Apollinairesongs,<\/em> are transfixed by the life in rockpools or mountains reflected across the bay in Gordon Kerry\u2019s Three Malouf Songs<\/em> and walk in the wet sand beside the seashore in Gillian Whitehead\u2019s Girl with a Guitar<\/em>. The night sky appears – \u2018the sleepy stretch and dazzle of it\u2019 ablaze with stars \u2018like bees\u2019 – and the changing moon is \u2018like an apricot\u2019, \u2018honeyed\u2019 or \u2018silvering shores\u2019.<\/p>\n

In their 20th anniversary year, this program again features composers of outstanding vocal music with a deep responsiveness to the poetry that inspires them, many of whom have had long associations with Halcyon and includes works drawn from Australia, New Zealand, the UK and the USA.<\/p>\n

Halcyon will reprise a number of significant and quintessentially Halcyon works premiered by the ensemble over the years – Rosalind Page\u2019s Apollinairesongs<\/em> (2002) for mezzo, flute, clarinet. viola, cello and piano (also featured on their first studio album, Cool Black<\/em>) and Gordon Kerry\u2019s Three Malouf Songs<\/em> (2015) for mezzo, violin, cello and piano.<\/p>\n

Also featured are two Australian premieres: Hilary Tann\u2019s evocative Winter Sun, Summer Rain,<\/em> whose musical aesthetic is heavily influenced by both nature and the traditional music of Japan and Gillian Whitehead\u2019s Girl with a Guitar<\/em>, a through-composed work for voice, cello and piano, setting seven short poems inspired by nature.<\/p>\n

A series of short duos fill out the program \u2013 Sadie Harrison\u2019s for voice and clarinet, Robert Lombardo\u2019s for voice and viola and Ross Edwards\u2019 for voice and piano, the last a small token acknowledging his 75th birthday this December.<\/p>\n
