Music at St James\u2019 presents The Choir of St James\u2019 and Australian Baroque Brass directed by John Foster in Angels\u00a0and Trumpets: A Renaissance Christmas.<\/em><\/p>\n In response to the\u00a0overwhelming reception it received in 2015, Music at St James\u2019 is inviting Australian\u00a0Baroque Brass to return to St James\u2019 to perform Praetorius\u2019 sumptuous Christmas Mass<\/em> with The Choir of St James\u2019.\u00a0Directed by John Foster and inspired by Paul McCreesh\u2019s award-winning reconstruction of the Lutheran Christmas\u00a0Mass, this vivid composite work transports with its grand and buoyant mix of motets, rousing participatory congregational\u00a0hymns, plainchant and interludes played on period instruments.<\/p>\n Complementing Michael Praetorius\u2019 mass is music by Monteverdi, Hassler and Martin Luther, Schein, Scheidt and Weckmann.\u00a0This festival of early music encapsulates the joyous Christmas spirit and is not to be missed.<\/p>\n The Friends of Music at St James\u2019 Christmas Party follows the concert, at which patrons can sign-up for membership\u00a0and subscribe to the 2019 concert season.<\/p>\n The Choir of St James\u2019, directed by Warren Trevelyan-Jones, enjoys a reputation of being one of the finest choirs in\u00a0Australia. It is one of the oldest musical establishments in Australia and is linked to the earliest days of the colony of New South Wales. Some of its early members were convicts. The Choir maintains a schedule of regular weekly choral\u00a0services, Sunday Cantata Services, Orchestral Masses, and its own Subscription Concert Series. It has a large and\u00a0varied repertoire encompassing music from the Middle Ages to the contemporary, and it is committed to supporting\u00a0new Australian works, including compositions written by past and present members of the Choir.<\/p>\n Australian Baroque Brass (ABB) is renowned as one of Australia\u2019s finest early music ensembles. Under the artistic\u00a0directorship of baroque trumpeter and scholar John Foster, the ensemble has pioneered the use of period brass\u00a0instruments in Australia.
