Sydney music lovers will be familiar with the unmistakable presence and extraordinary talent of trumpeter Paul Goodchild in the brass section of the\u00a0Sydney Symphony Orchestra. This year, Paul, who is\u00a0Associate Principal Trumpet with the SSO, celebrates 40-years of music-making with the orchestra which will commemorate this remarkable milestone with special concert.<\/p>\n

The Sydney Symphony Celebrates Paul Goodchild <\/em>will feature William Lovelock\u2019s Trumpet Concerto, <\/em>with Paul as soloist.\u00a0Conducted by Australian-British conductor Jessica\u00a0Cottis,\u00a0The Sydney Symphony Orchestra celebrates Paul\u00a0Goodchild<\/em>\u00a0 also include Nielsen\u2019s\u00a0Symphony No.4, The Inextinguishable.\u00a0<\/em>Macens\u2019\u00a0The Space Between Stars<\/em>\u00a0will be performed on Wednesday 8 May, while Sibelius\u2019\u00a0Finlandia<\/em>\u00a0will be performed Thursday 9 and Friday 10 May.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis concerto holds a real personal touch for me as it was written for John Robertson, my hero in the trumpet world and a close colleague of my father\u2019s. This will certainly be one of the highlights of my 40 years in the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, up there with the numerous overseas tours the orchestra has undertaken.\u201d<\/p>\n

The son of Clifford Goodchild, former Principal Tuba with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra from 1951-1987, Paul has been a permanent member with the SSO since the age of 18, going on to be appointed Associate Principal Trumpet in 1985. Describing his father as a mentor and a \u201cgreat mate\u201d, both father and son performed together in the orchestra on several occasions.<\/p>\n

Over the years, Paul has performed both as an orchestral musician and soloist with the SSO.\u00a0In 2005, he gave the world premiere of Australian composer Alan Holley’s trumpet concerto Doppler’s Web<\/em> with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra \u2013 a piece that was dedicated to him.<\/p>\n
