The Australian String Quartet<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The Australian String Quartet (ASQ) will premiere Nigel Westlake\u2019s new work Sacred Sky<\/em> in an evocative program alongside works by Charles Ives and Claude Debussy.<\/p>\n

Commissioned by the ASQ and written as an homage to the spirit of his late sister Kate, who passed away in early 2018, Westlake\u2019s piece renders emotions related to life and loss in the special way that only music can truly accomplish.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have endeavoured to invoke Kate\u2019s spirit, in the hope of imbuing the music with themes of beauty, energy, soulfulness, and transcendence. Inevitably the fingerprints of grief and sadness permeate the musical narrative at times,\u201d Nigel Westlake said.<\/p>\n

This will be Westlake\u2019s third string quartet, and the first written for the ASQ. Among numerous compositions over his four-decade career, the highly praised and award-winning composer is also known for his film scores which include Ali\u2019s Wedding, Paper Planes, Miss Potter, Babe,<\/em> Babe II<\/em> and IMAX films Antarctica, Imagine, Solarmax<\/em> and The Edge<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Complementing Westlake\u2019s work is Charles Ives\u2019 ground-breaking String Quartet No 1,<\/em> From the Salvation Army,<\/em> and Claude Debussy\u2019s monumental String Quartet op 10.<\/em><\/p>\n

From its home base at the University of Adelaide, Elder Conservatorium of Music, the ASQ delivers outstanding concerts and workshops both nationally and internationally. The Quartet\u2019s distinct sound is created by a matched set of 18th century Guadagnini instruments, handcrafted by Giovanni Battista Guadagnini between c.1743 and 1784 in Turin and Piacenza, Italy.
