Presented as part of The Big Anxiety Festival, the world premiere of\u00a0 Daughters<\/em> comprises haunting, music based on stories of gender violence.<\/p>\n

Daughters<\/em>\u00a0exposes a story often hidden behind closed doors and swept away from society\u2019s day-to-day life. It is a global crisis that affects one in three women in their lifetime and is a narrative that needs to be transformed and brought out into the open.<\/p>\n

Through the expressive form of the Portuguese fado, guitarists and singers join to tell 12 real-life stories of women and girls affected by gender violence. This performance aims to show how music can deliver the strength of the women and girls who have been lost to this violence.\u00a0The song-cycle is part of a world first intercultural Australian and Indian opera project, The Daughters Opera Project. The full international opera work premieres in New Delhi, India in January 2020.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/em>Daughters is a collections of songs about the transformation of collective trauma using the power and beauty of song, music and poetry to bring a light to the global pandemic of gender violence against women and girls\u201d <\/em>says Tammy Brennan, librettist for Daughters.

\u00a0<\/strong>A special In Conversation session will take place pre-show and will feature Tammy Brennan (Librettist) and Moo Baulch (former CEO Domestic Violence NSW) moderated by Andrea Durbach (Professor of Law\u00a0UNSW).\u00a0 It will look at the\u00a0role of art and artistic processes as mechanisms for transforming community attitudes to gender inequality and resulting harm.<\/p>\n
