{"id":28745,"date":"2021-03-16T11:32:01","date_gmt":"2021-03-16T00:32:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/?p=28745"},"modified":"2021-03-16T11:32:01","modified_gmt":"2021-03-16T00:32:01","slug":"album-review-schubert-die-schone-mullerin-greco-helyard-abc-classic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/?p=28745","title":{"rendered":"Album Review: Schubert Die Sch\u00f6ne M\u00fcllerin\/ Greco\/ Helyard\/ ABC Classic"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Schubert: Die Sch\u00f6ne M\u00fcllerin<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>David Greco (baritone) Erin Helyard (piano)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>ABC 481 8741<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Written by Randolph Magri-Overend<\/em><\/p>\n<p>What better enjoyment can you have on a day teeming with rain (I would have used a stronger word to emphasise the dreariness but my editor would insist on changing it) when you can sit comfortably in your favourite armchair listening to Lieder.\u00a0 In this case it\u2019s Messrs David Greco and Erin Helyard and their elegant CD, <em>Schubert: Die Sch\u00f6ne M\u00fcllerin.<\/em> They make a formidable team \u2013 David with his clear enunciation (even in German) and easy musical fluency and Erin with his wonderful talent on the piano.<\/p>\n<p>From the word &#8216;go&#8217; you can tell they mean business.\u00a0 The energy from both in the first song <em>Das Wandern<\/em> (Rambling) is clear and precise.\u00a0 In contrast, the next song is dramatic.\u00a0 Throughout, Erin\u2019s playing is sympathetic with a touch of elegance.\u00a0 His touch is clear (as it should be), never obtruding into the vocal line.\u00a0 I recall years ago, Lieder being described as two separate pieces of music which never meet\u2026..meaning the piano plays one tune and the singer something totally different.\u00a0 That is an over-simplification (if not wrong).\u00a0 True, the musical lines are different but both artists have to realise that without one, the other is \u2018legless\u2019 and that one has to listen to the other artistically, rhythmically and musically.\u00a0 By musically I mean dramatic when drama is required, fluent when legato predominates and emotional when pathos creeps in.<\/p>\n<p>The story of how Schubert first came across Wilhelm M\u00fcller\u2019s poetry is cloaked in mystery.\u00a0 One story has it that after he read it in a friend\u2019s house, Schubert nicked the book and when the friend came to retrieve it from Schubert\u2019s house the following day, the latter had already composed the first songs.\u00a0 Another, more plausible story, is that he was introduced to it by Weber who was a great friend of M\u00fcller.<\/p>\n<p>The cycle revolves around a journeyman discovering and following a brook that eventually leads him to a mill.\u00a0 He falls in love with the miller\u2019s daughter who, alas, rejects his advances.\u00a0 Her affections are devoted to a huntsman (not the spidery kind) clad in green.\u00a0 In a fit of anguish and distress the journeyman starts hating everything green before fantasising of his own death in which flowers sprout from his grave to express his undying love.\u00a0 The songs are mostly in strophic form and the music meanders between cheerful optimism and despairing sadness.<\/p>\n<p>Schubert first started composing the cycle in 1823.\u00a0 He\u2019d been diagnosed with syphilis by then and composed the first songs in hospital.\u00a0 It was published in 1824 in Vienna as Schubert\u2019s Op. 25 and entitled <em>Ein Zyklu von Liedern<\/em> (A Song Cycle).<\/p>\n<p>But to come back to this fascinating CD\u2026.. I found David\u2019s <em>sotto voce<\/em> wonderfully evocative and almost tenor-like.\u00a0 He quickly returns to his normal baritone when called for.\u00a0 For example his <em>Ungeduld<\/em> (Impatience) is dramatic and urgent, yet the following song <em>Morgengruss<\/em> (Morning Greeting) reverts to <em>legato<\/em> and <em>sotto voce.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Erin also has time to indulge in a solo in Schubert\u2019s <em>Impromptu in G-flat major, D899 no 3.<\/em>\u00a0 I am no great expert on piano music but it sets the tone for the rest of the songs \u2026. numbers 14 to 21.<\/p>\n<p>There is only one blemish with this CD.\u00a0 It is that the cover notes Erin has written are packed with interesting information <strong>but<\/strong>\u2026..they are far too long and because of that (and here I am guessing) the font used is small and faint.\u00a0 Hard to read.\u00a0 Nothing to do with the music, but\u2026..<\/p>\n<p>\u2026..does anyone know of a microscope being auctioned on eBay?<\/p>\n<p><em>Randolph Magri-Overend\u00a0 for SoundsLikeSydney\u00a9<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-28747\" src=\"https:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/RMO-100x100.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/>When Randolph Magri-Overend first set foot on the Sydney Opera House stage to act in &#8216;Boris Godunov&#8217; in late 1979, he hoped his Nannu Gusi was taking note from up above. He was the driving force behind Randolph&#8217;s love for classical music, especially opera.
