{"id":28927,"date":"2021-04-08T12:39:05","date_gmt":"2021-04-08T02:39:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/?p=28927"},"modified":"2021-04-08T12:39:05","modified_gmt":"2021-04-08T02:39:05","slug":"album-review-beautiful-world-frances-madden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/?p=28927","title":{"rendered":"Album Review: Beautiful World\/Frances Madden"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Beautiful World <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Frances Madden, vocals, piano, and (on all but 2 tracks) lyricist and composer\/ 13 piece band including Ian Cooper on violin<\/p>\n<p><u>ABC 085 8752<\/u><u>\u00a0<\/u><\/p>\n<p>This is one of those CDs that delight all the senses.\u00a0 It is highly enjoyable, it sparkles, entertains, charms and in more ways than one, makes you want to get up and dance.\u00a0 If you want to watch Frances Madden sprinkle her magic you can always have a look at some of the tracks on YouTube, particularly her rendition of <em>The Tango Never Lies<\/em>.\u00a0 If you do listen and watch, use earphones.\u00a0 Suddenly you\u2019re in the same room as Frances and all the nuances are highlighted including the lyrics which start \u201cDear it\u2019s come to my attention that there\u2019s a sparkle in your eye.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It has been said &#8211; variously attributed to Mozart and Debussy &#8211; that a musical note isn\u2019t as important as the silence before it. This is highlighted in the preamble to the tango.\u00a0 Frances starts with some pianistic calisthenics and after a very brief <em>fermata<\/em>, the tango rhythm follows.\u00a0 Another pause and we are left to anticipate the rest of the orchestra joining in.\u00a0 The anticipation makes the music that follows, all the more exciting.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the album is just as stimulating. The 10 tracks include 2 that Frances has not composed.\u00a0 The first is her rendition of the title <em>Beautiful World<\/em> and a few minutes later she embarks on an energetic version (not that the original had a slouchy tempo) of Peter Allen\u2019s <em>I Go To Rio.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve highlighted Ian Cooper\u2019s contribution in the credits. He is a musician whom I have seen perform and chatted to. He is a first class entertainer and an equally brilliant jazz violinist.<\/p>\n<p>There is no doubt that Frances is one of the brightest talents Australia has produced in years.\u00a0 Don\u2019t take my word for it.\u00a0 She\u2019s been compared to Diana Krall but, in my eyes, she is a far better singer than Krall and certainly more entertaining. The \u00a0ABC Jazz critic has described her as \u201cone to watch.\u201d John McBeath, \u2018The Australian\u2019s\u2019 jazz scribe has written that \u201cFrances has an individual expressive ability, a musical professionalism, a good feel for swing in jazz and she plays fine piano.\u201d \u00a0In addition, Frances has an impish sense of humour as illustrated by Eric Myers, also from \u2018The Australian\u2019 who wrote after the launch of the album in Penrith on December 4, 2020: \u00a0\u201cOn the face of it, <em>You\u2019re Doing So Well<\/em> sounds like a rather sad tale of lost love.\u00a0 At this performance Madden revealed that it was inspired in fact by returning home after a long absence to find that her orchid had flourished while she was away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even if you\u2019re not into jazz or dancing or expressing your feelings when music moves you, I am pretty sure your feet will be tapping to the rhythm and enthusiasm that Frances generates naturally.<\/p>\n<p>And that is the secret of this album.\u00a0 It is natural and because of that, genuine.\u00a0 The rest is a bonus.<\/p>\n<p><em>SoundsLikeSydney\u00a9<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>About Randolph Magri-Overend<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-28930\" src=\"https:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/RMO-1-100x100.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;When I first set foot on the Sydney Opera House stage to act in Boris Godunov in late 1979, I hoped my Nannu Gusi was taking note from up above.
