{"id":30912,"date":"2023-02-09T13:39:27","date_gmt":"2023-02-09T02:39:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/?p=30912"},"modified":"2023-02-09T13:39:27","modified_gmt":"2023-02-09T02:39:27","slug":"schiff-plays-bach-on-the-clavichord-on-new-2cd-set","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/schiff-plays-bach-on-the-clavichord-on-new-2cd-set\/","title":{"rendered":"Schiff Plays Bach On The Clavichord On New 2CD Set"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Renowned Hungarian-born British pianist Andr\u00e1s Schiff has a new 2 CD release entitled <em>Clavichord<\/em> on ECM Records, on which he plays the keyboard works of JS Bach on the instrument for which they were written &#8211; the clavichord.<\/p>\n<p>The sound of the clavichord is, says Andr\u00e1s Schiff, an invitation into \u201ca new world, a quiet oasis in our noisy, troubled times. Thanks to the clavichord I now play and hear Bach differently.\u201d An intimate and personal instrument \u2013 \u201ca most gentle creature, ideal for playing alone\u201d \u2013 it can also be, as Schiff notes, a demanding and unforgiving teacher. \u201cOn the clavichord we have only our fingers at disposal, they must create the music with the finest gradations of touch.\u201d The early keyboard works are emphasized here, bringing us closer to the sounds of Bach\u2019s day, and the \u201ccantabile art\u201d of the clavichord.<\/p>\n<p>The album opens with the <em>Capriccio sopra la lontananza del fratro dilettissmo<\/em>, journeys through <em>Inventions BWV 772-786, <\/em>Duets <em>BWV 802-805<\/em>, <em>Sinfonias BWV 787-801,<\/em> and the Ricecar \u00e1 3<br \/>from <em>Das Musikalische Opfer BWV 1079<\/em> concluding with an extraordinary account of the <em>Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue BWV 903.<\/em>\u00a0On this recording, Schiff\u2019s first on the clavichord, he plays a replica of a 1743 Specken instrument, built by Belgian craftsman Joris Potvlieghe. The album was recorded in the Kammermusik Saal of Bonn\u2019s Beethoven-Haus and produced by Manfred Eicher.<\/p>\n<p>Born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1953, Andr\u00e1s Schiff studied piano at the Liszt Ferenc Academy with Gy\u00f6rgy Kurt\u00e1g amongst others and later in London with George Malcome. He has performed cycles of complete Beethoven sonatas, and projects including the complete works of J.S. Bach, Haydn, Schubert, and Bart\u00f3k constitute an important part of his work. He last performed in Sydney for Musica Viva in 2018.<\/p>\n<p><a
