The Danish String Quartet brings its highly acclaimed Prism<\/em> project to a conclusion with Prism V<\/em> its fifth and final volume on the ECM label. On it are Johann Sebastian Bach\u2019s chorale prelude Vor deinen Thron tret ich hiermit<\/em> ‘opens up like a flower’ (as Paul Griffiths writes in the liner notes) with Ludwig van Beethoven\u2019s String Quartet No. 16 in F major <\/em>and Anton Webern\u2019s early String Quartet<\/em>, composed in 1905 and inspired both by Beethoven and Schoenberg. The programme returns to Bach with Contrapunctus 14<\/em> from The Art of the Fugue.<\/em><\/p>\n

From conception to completion, the Danish String Quartet\u2019s\u00a0Prism\u00a0<\/em>project has been almost eight years in the making. For the players, it has been a process of discovery. Lines of connection are drawn in the five Prism<\/em> volumes, from a Bach fugue through one of the late Beethoven quartets \u00a0to the music of a subsequent composer: \u201cA beam of music is split through Beethoven\u2019s prism,\u201d in the Danes\u2019 words.<\/p>\n

Throughout the series the DSQ have emphasized that \u201clate Beethoven is not a disconnected island in music,\u201d but rather \u201ca continuation from Bach and the old masters,\u201d which, furthermore, points toward the future. Previous recordings in the series have addressed the influence of late Beethoven on Shostakovich, Schnittke, Bart\u00f3k and Mendelssohn. On Prism V, recorded in Copenhagen, and produced by Manfred Eicher,\u00a0Bach and Beethoven are heard alongside Anton Webern, and musical affinities are newly illuminated.<\/p>\n

The Danish String Quartet\u2019s three Danish-born members, Rune Tonsgaard S\u00f8rensen, Frederik \u00d8land and Asbj\u00f8rn N\u00f8rgaard first played chamber music together in a music summer camp before they were even teenagers. They made their first recording in 2006 as the Young Danish String Quartet. In 2008, Norwegian cellist Fredrik Sch\u00f8yen Sj\u00f6lin joined the quartet, and the group has since gone from strength to strength, with repertoire embracing core classical and contemporary music, as well as folk music.<\/p>\n

The DSQ\u2019s Prism series of recordings was initiated in 2016 with the first volume incorporating Bach\u2019s Fugue in E-flat major<\/em> from The Well-Tempered Clavier,<\/em> Beethoven\u2019s String Quartet No. 12<\/em> and Shostakovich\u2019s Quartet No. 15<\/em>. The album received a Grammy nomination. Prism II features Bach\u2019s B-flat minor Fugue<\/em> from The Well-Tempered Clavier<\/em>, Beethoven\u2019s String Quartet Op. 130\/\u201cGro\u00dfe Fuge\u201d Op. 133,<\/em> and Alfred Schnittke\u2019s String Quartet No. 3<\/em>. On Prism III the quartet interprets Bach\u2019s C-sharp minor Fugue<\/em>, Beethoven\u2019s String Quartet Op. 131<\/em> and B\u00e9la Bart\u00f3k\u2019s String Quartet No. 1. <\/em>Prism IV with Bach\u2019s G minor Fugue,<\/em> Beethoven String Quartet Op. 132<\/em> and Mendelssohn\u2019s String Quartet No. 2<\/em> again netted much critical praise.<\/p>\n

The CD booklet includes liner notes by Paul Griffiths and a performers\u2019 note from the Danish String Quartet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
