{"id":32352,"date":"2024-08-20T14:02:49","date_gmt":"2024-08-20T04:02:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/?p=32352"},"modified":"2024-08-20T14:02:49","modified_gmt":"2024-08-20T04:02:49","slug":"oscar-wong-wins-sydney-eisteddfod-kawai-senior-piano-scholarship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/?p=32352","title":{"rendered":"Oscar Wong Wins Sydney Eisteddfod Kawai Senior Piano Scholarship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">Oscar Wong from the Gold Coast<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">, Queensland has won the Sydney Eisteddfod Kawai Senior Piano Scholarship for 2024 gaining praise from the adjudicators for his renditions of Miriam Hyde\u2019s <em>Forest Stream,<\/em> Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Chopin<em><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">\u202f<\/span>Preludes<\/em>, and selections from Beethoven\u2019s <em>Sonata in E flat-major<\/em>, Karol Maciej Szymanowski\u2019s\u00a0<em>Masques <\/em>and Nikolai Kapustin\u2019s <em>Etudes.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">Oscar is currently studying with Professor Katarzyna Popowa-Zydro\u0144 and Pawe\u0142 Wakarecy at the Feliks Nowowiejski Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz, in Poland. He previously graduated with a Bachelor of Music (with Distinction) from the Queensland Conservatorium, studying with Natasha Vlassenko.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: var(--global-body-font-family);\">Oscar has won numerous awards domestically and internationally, including First Prizes in the Antoni Radziwill International Piano Competition (Poland, 2024), International Chopin Competition in ASIA (Japan, 2023), Premio Concurs Elisabeth Tschaikowsky (Switzerland, 2022) and the Lev Vlassenko Piano Competition (2017).\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">As soloist, he has performed concerti by J.S. Bach, Chopin, Schumann, Henze, Mendelssohn, Saint-Sa\u00ebns and Tchaikovsky. In November, he will be performing Chopin\u2019s E minor Concerto with the AMFN Symphony Orchestra in Poland, under Maestro Micha\u0142 Dworzy\u0144ski.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">The Sydney Eisteddfod Kawai Senior Piano Scholarship was established to discover and encourage promising young pianists, aged 17-26 years, on the cusp of a professional career. It offers a first prize of $12,000 ($2,000 cash plus $10,000 Scholarship) for further study in Australia or overseas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">Adjudicating the scholarship contenders were <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">Vatche Jambazian, Jerry Wong\u00a0and Konstantin Shamray and a live audience, at St Paul&#8217;s College, University of Sydney. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">The four other finalists were Rachel Shindang (Point Cook, VIC), Anna Gao (Mount Dandenong, VIC) and Tony Lu (Cherrybrook, NSW) selected from 20 of Australia\u2019s most talented emerging pianists.\u00a0 Former 2021 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">Scholarship winner Calvin Abdiel, currently studying for Master&#8217;s degree in Europe returned to this year\u2019s event as a guest performer, playing Rachmaninoff.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:
