Piano virtuoso Andrea Lam and award-winning Australian composer Matthew Hindson have collaborated on a new release Sad Piano<\/em> on ABC Classic.<\/p>\n

This album of intimate music comes from the heart and goes straight to the soul conveying sweetness and sadness, memories and hopes, love and longing in a collection of introspective solo piano music.<\/p>\n

Matthew Hindson started composing this collection during the Covid-19 lockdown. He says “Music making was smashed and the connection between composer, performer and audience wasn\u2019t possible any more. Suddenly, the large symphonic works I was writing seemed irrelevant. I wanted to write intimate music, music directly connecting to our emotions and to other people.”<\/p>\n

Pianist Andrea Lam quickly connected with the pieces. \u2018This is very introspective, very intimate music that is, I think, very particular to the piano; almost a confessional diary. Those deepest thoughts you have, when you\u2019re by yourself and you can\u2019t even articulate what you\u2019re thinking. Matthew\u2019s music has a really direct appeal, it\u2019s a very visceral kind of music that has an immediate effect, an immediate impact, which I love.\u2019 The writing is simple, allowing Lam to linger on each note, letting the piano\u2019s delicate voice speak to our inmost emotions.<\/p>\n

Premiered for Sydney Opera House\u2019 International Piano Day Celebrations in 2022, with the film clip for that track (Love) winning the 2023 Australian Cinematographers Society \u2018Gold Tripod\u2019 award, each live performance of Hindson\u2019s Sad Piano<\/em> pieces has been met with warmth.<\/p>\n
