Willoughby Symphony Orchestra and Chorus<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Felix Mendelssohns\u2019s most prolific output was not for orchestras, but for choirs and solo voices. A recent feature in Classic FM magazine estimates his orchestral works as comprising just 12 % of his opus whilst choral and vocal music represent the single largest genre at a sizeable 33%. Most of his best writing is said to be for voices, but it is his orchestral works that are perhaps more familiar.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0These two threads of Mendelssohn\u2019s music merge in the Willoughby Symphony Choir and Orchestra\u2019s July presentation Lobgesang<\/em> (Hymn of Praise) <\/em>conducted by Dr Nicholas Milton at the City Recital Hall.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Lobgesang is steeped in history. Mendelssohn wrote it on commission when he was just 31, to celebrate in Leipzig,\u00a0 the quatercentenary of\u00a0 the invention of Gutenberg\u2019s printing press. Coincidentally, we in Sydney are able to hear this majestic choral work in year that the world observes the quatercentenary of the King James bible, the reach of which was enabled by the invention of the printing press.<\/div>\n

\u00a0First performed in 1840 in Leipzig\u2019s iconic Tomaskirche, it is, in the composer\u2019s own words, \u2018A Symphony-Cantata on Words of the Holy Bible, for Soloists, Chorus and Orchestra’. Comprising three orchestral movements followed by nine movements for chorus and\/or soloists and orchestra it is sometimes chronicled as Mendelssohn\u2019s Symphony No 2 and acknowledged as Mendelssohn\u2019s homage to Beethoven\u2019s 9th<\/sup> symphony<\/em>, which, incidentally has far less choral content than Lobgesang.<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

For the listener, Lobgesang <\/em>has much that is familiar.\u00a0 The hymn \u2018Now thank we all our God\u2019 appears as the eight movement as \u201d Nun danket alle Gott\u2019, first written by a German hymn writer of the 17th<\/sup>century, Johann Cruger. There is also the duet for two sopranos \u2018I waited for the Lord\u2019.<\/p>\n

Soprano Angela Brun and tenor Bradley Cooper perform the solos and conductor Dr Nicholas Milton returns to Sydney to celebrate his 10th<\/sup>anniversary with the choir, after working with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Staatskappelle Halle and a premiere season of Puccini\u2019s La Fanciulla Del West<\/em>with the Tiroler Landestheater, Innsbruck.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
