Oboeist Diana Doherty is justly celebrated as one of Australia\u2019s greatest living musicians. She has been principal Oboe with the Sydney Symphony since 1997, prior to\u00a0which she held the same position with the Orchestra of Lucerne. This tour is a rare opportunity to experience her artistry in combination with her international peers and friends.<\/p>\n
This April she joins the\u00a0St Lawrence String Quartet\u00a0on their first national tour together, presenting a program of Haydn, Mozart & Beethoven matched with works by contemporary Australian composers Gordon Kerry and Matthew Hindson.<\/p>\n
The St Lawrence String Quartet was established in 1989. Since 1998 they have held the position of Ensemble in Residence at Stanford University and are Visting Artists at Toronto University.\u00a0 Violinist Geoff Nuttall and violist Lesley Robertson\u00a0are founding members of the group; cellist Christopher Costanza\u00a0joined the quartet in 2003 and violinist\u00a0Scott St. John\u00a0in 2006. Depending on concert repertoire, the two violinists alternate the role of first violin<\/p>\n
Diana Doherty is\u00a0famous for the physical commitment of her performances; she perhaps is the only musician to be invited to play and dance a concerto – an\u00a0 innovative Oboe Concerto by Ross Edwards\u00a0includes choreography for the oboeist.\u00a0She premiered this concerto in 2002, under the baton of Lorin Maazel who\u00a0invited her to play and dance it with the\u00a0New York Philharmonic\u00a0in 2005. Since then\u00a0Doherty has\u00a0become\u00a0synonymous with the concerto. Likewise, the\u00a0St Lawrence String Quartet is\u00a0acclaimed\u00a0for its\u00a0dynamism and energy. Put them together in the concert hall, and the result is joy,\u00a0exuberance, and an experience to remember.<\/p>\n
The Quartet is excited about collaborating with Doherty.\u00a0Geoff Nuttall says\u00a0\u201cDiana is a perfect combination of unbridled enthusiasm and focus and incredible control. With her, the oboe disappears and you just notice the music.\u201d Diana is equally thrilled about performing with the group, \u201cwho really think about how to do things in a fresh way\u201d.<\/p>\n
