There are few works with titles as apocalyptic as Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of\u00a0Time<\/em> (Quatuor pour la fin du temps<\/em>) which is one of the works chosen by the Sirius Chamber\u00a0Ensemble for their May performance.\u00a0They will also perform Ross Edwards’ Incantations<\/em> for Wind Quintet and Beethoven’s Clarinet Trio in\u00a0B flat major opus 11.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Sirius Chamber Ensemble was formed by Ian Sykes (clarinet), Alison Evans (bassoon), Julia Zeltzer (French horn), Georgina Price (viola), Clare Kahn (cello), and Claire Howard Race (piano).\u00a0 Their passion is to\u00a0perform the greatest pieces from the classical chamber repertoire and the latest compositions for woodwinds and strings.<\/p>\n

The Quartet for the End of Time<\/em>\u00a0is a work with a particularly bleak history.\u00a0Messiaen was already a recognised composer when World War II erupted.\u00a0He was conscripted and in May 1940, was captured and imprisoned at\u00a0G\u00f6rlitz in Silesia. There, during the winter of 1940\u201341, he completed this work for himself to play with a violinist, a cellist and a clarinetist\u00a0also inmates\u00a0of the camp. Even in these surroundings it was considered an ambitious work. In the eight movements of this extraordinary composition,\u00a0\u2018the end of time\u2019\u00a0is\u00a0depicted as\u00a0disruptions, variations\u00a0and irregularities in the development of rhythms and\u00a0tempi.<\/em><\/p>\n

Its mid-winter premiere was in\u00a0the camp, before a huge audience of prisoners.<\/p>\n

In contrast, Ross Edwards’ Incantations<\/em> offers\u00a0optimism\u00a0with its themes of life and regeneration.\u00a0Edwards\u00a0has described his\u00a0music as being influenced by ” the natural environment….. a timeless continuum….the supreme generative force behind everything I write”.\u00a0 (The Australian Music Centre).<\/p>\n

Beethoven’s Clarinet Trio opus 11<\/em> for clarinet, cello and piano also known as the Gassenhauer<\/em> has many guises. The\u00a0clarinet is sometimes replaced\u00a0by the violin, and the cello by the bassoon.\u00a0Its popular third movement theme was used by other composers like Weigl, Paganini and von Eybler and is taken from German street songs that were popular at the time (Gasse<\/em>: ‘street’; hauer<\/em>:’hit’).<\/p>\n
