\nRenee Fleming’s new CD Po\u00e8mes <\/em>celebrates Gallic vocal\u00a0music from Ravel’s Orientalist infused Sh\u00e9h\u00e9razade, <\/em>written at \u00a0the turn of the last century\u00a0and\u00a0Messiaen’s Po\u00e8mes pour Mi,\u00a0<\/em>to\u00a0Deux\u00a0 Sonnets de Jean Cassou\u00a0<\/em>and a world premiere recording of Le Temps l\u2019horloge <\/em>by\u00a0living composer Henri Dutilleux.<\/p>\n

The celebrated singer comments:<\/p>\n

” For the sheer sensual joy\u00a0 of singing, no language gives me more pleasure than French. Not only am I drawn\u00a0 in by the beauty of the poetry and the evocative texture of the music, but the\u00a0 unaccented and legato fluidity of these phrases places my voice in its optimal\u00a0 resonance.
\nMy connection to Ravel\u2019s Sh\u00e9h\u00e9razade <\/em>dates back to my early\u00a0 student days \u2014 specifically, a live cassette recording of Elly Ameling and the\u00a0 Rochester Philharmonic. This was one of the pieces that inspired me to follow\u00a0 the path towards classical music. \u00a0 Time seems suspended in\u00a0 the second and third movements in a way that is especially appealing to me.<\/p>\n

More recently, serendipity\u00a0 proved a powerful catalyst for collaboration. It was a chance meeting at Radio France, on a\u00a0 day when Henri Dutilleux and I were both scheduled for on-air interviews. I\u00a0 declared my appreciation for his art and planted the seed for a commissioned\u00a0 work \u2014 all in the waiting room. Years later, I received the exciting offer to\u00a0 premiere Le\u00a0 Temps l\u2019horloge <\/em>with Seiji Ozawa in Paris and Japan. I am\u00a0 transported by the beauty of this work, as well as by the enigmatic, equally \u201cmusical\u201d\u00a0 quality of the poetry. \u00a0 Henri requested that I\u00a0 sing Deux\u00a0 Sonnets de Jean Cassou<\/em>, and he sent me a score into which he\u2019d written a\u00a0 transposition of \u00a0 the first song, wanting to\u00a0 hear it in my voice. Nothing has been more inspiring to me as an interpretive\u00a0 performer than hands on collaboration with a composer. I envy my colleagues of\u00a0 earlier eras, who devoted most of their time to premiering new works.<\/p>\n

When Alan Gilbert\u00a0 suggested I sing Po\u00e8mes pour Mi <\/em>for his inaugural concert as music\u00a0 director of the New York Philharmonic, I was both honoured and perplexed:\u00a0 honoured to share such an important event with a conductor I admire; perplexed\u00a0 because I had always associated dramatic sopranos with the piece. Alan convinced\u00a0 me that the orchestration could be transparent enough, and together we \u00a0 found the luminosity that\u00a0 one associates with Messiaen in this work”.<\/p>\n

Ravel’s song cycle Sh\u00e9h\u00e9razade <\/em>(1903)\u00a0for soprano solo (or tenor)and orchestra contains three poems Asie<\/em>, La fl\u00fbte enchant\u00e9e<\/em>, and L’indiff\u00e9rent<\/em>, written by Tristan Klingsor.<\/p>\n

Messiaen’s Po\u00e8mes pour Mi\u00a0<\/em> (1936) was dedicated to his first wife, violinist Claire Delbos, whose nickname was “Mi”.\u00a0 Considered to be his first significant song cycle, the words to the 9 songs\u00a0are his own and express\u00a0Messiaen’s deeply spiritual and personal sentiments on his marriage.\u00a0 Written at a time when he was discovering new rhythmic devices, like Ravel’s\u00a0Sh\u00e9h\u00e9razade<\/em>, this music too is influenced by Indian and Greek aesthetics.<\/p>\n

Prix de Rome<\/em> winner Henri Dutilleux (b 1916)\u00a0was influenced by both Ravel and Messiaen as well as Poulenc, Bartok and Schoenberg. His Deux\u00a0 Sonnets <\/em>(1954)\u00a0<\/em>was\u00a0written for baritone, but transcribed by the composer himself for Fleming for whom he also wrote Le\u00a0 Temps l\u2019horloge <\/em>(2007-2009).<\/em><\/p>\n

Fleming has made this recording with two of the world’s finest orchestras – the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France,\u00a0with Music Director Myung-Whun Chung and conducted by Alan Gilbert, and the Orchestre National de France with\u00a0 Music director Daniele Gatti , conducted by Seiji Ozawa.<\/p>\n
