The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra has announced that English conductor, organist and harpsichordist Sir Andrew Davis has been appointed to the position of Chief Conductor\u00a0and Artistic Director from January 2013.<\/p>\n

Sydney\u00a0audiences can take in a preview of this artistic collaboration when the\u00a0MSO performs at the Sydney Opera House with\u00a0its Chief Conductor elect at the end of\u00a0June.<\/p>\n

Sir Andrew Davis was born in 1944 and\u00a0studied at the Royal College of Music in London, at King’s College, Cambridge, where he was an organ scholar and at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in\u00a0Rome.<\/p>\n

His appointments have been with\u00a0the BBC Scottish SO, the Royal Liverpool PO,\u00a0the Toronto SO,\u00a0the BBC SO,\u00a0Glyndebourne Opera and\u00a0the Lyric Opera of Chicago. He has also made regular appearances at the Proms.<\/p>\n

His repertoire includes opera and choral works, ranging from the classics to the contemporary. He’s a passionate advocate of music by British composer and is a specialist in the works of Elgar and Tippett.\u00a0Mozart, Rossini, Tchaikovsky, Jan\u00e1\u010dek, Shostakovich, Delius, Vaughan-Williams\u00a0and Richard Strauss are all composers whose readings by him are of special note.<\/p>\n

Sir Andrew’s plans for the MSO include\u00a0a focus on the symphonies of Gustav Mahler, the tone poems of Richard Strauss and the orchestral music of Hector Berlioz. International and digital release recordings are planned the Chandos label.<\/p>\n
