The Leichhardt Espresso Chorus conducted by Michelle Leonard presents their concert Eternity and Grace <\/em>this weekend,\u00a0<\/em>performing<\/em> two world premieres of music by polymath Sally Whitwell and composer,\u00a0arranger and singer\u00a0Dan Walker.<\/p>\n

Sally Whitwell’s\u00a0Breath of Kindness<\/em>\u00a0is a\u00a0suite of three songs, commissioned by\u00a0the friends of the LEC to celebrate the pleasures of life-long friendships.\u00a0The three songs are\u00a0Twisting Up <\/em>with text by Marie Tulip,\u00a0Some Future Time<\/em> with texts by Sappho and Dorothy McRae McMahon, and Breath of Kindness<\/em> with text by Dinah Mulock Craik, May Sarton and Maya Angelou.<\/p>\n

Sally has an intimate\u00a0understanding of vocal writing having worked with the\u00a0Sydney Children’s Choir and Gondawana Voices for a number of years as pianist and chorus master. As\u00a0a solo pianist her first album Mad Rush\u00a0– Solo Piano Music of Philip Glass <\/em>won\u00a0the 2011 ARIA Award for\u00a0Best Classical Album. Her second album, cinematically inspired\u00a0and called The Good, the Bad and the Awkward, <\/em>centred around Yann Tiersen’s piano suite from the film Am\u00e9lie <\/em>was released recently and is already enjoying popular success and critical acclaim.<\/p>\n

Were all the stars to disappear and die<\/em> by\u00a0Sydney musician\u00a0Dan Walker is the second composer whose composition will be heard in public\u00a0for the very first time this weekend.\u00a0The piece\u00a0is based on text by WH Auden from The More Loving One<\/em>.\u00a0Walker\u00a0 has had works commissioned and performed by groups including the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, The Song Company, Gondwana Voices and the\u00a0Queensland Youth Choir. In 2003, Walker was the Sydney\u00a0 Children’s Choir composer in residence where he is currently Assistant Conductor. As a singer, he is\u00a0a\u00a0core member of Cantillation, Pinchgut Opera, and a guest\u00a0 member of The Song Company and the Opera Australia chorus.<\/p>\n

For this concert, the\u00a0Leichhardt Espresso Chorus will\u00a0sing with a chamber orchestra. The concert repertoire includes a number of other songs by contemporary Australian composers, including\u00a0 Longing<\/em> by\u00a0Elena Kats-Chernin,\u00a0 Invidia,<\/em> Acedia<\/em> and Superbia <\/em>from\u00a0Dan Walker’s\u00a0Seven Deadly Sins Suite, <\/em>Bundle of Joy<\/em> by Melbourne composer Katie Abbot.<\/p>\n
