{"id":8699,"date":"2012-07-26T16:34:38","date_gmt":"2012-07-26T06:34:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/?p=8699"},"modified":"2012-07-26T16:34:38","modified_gmt":"2012-07-26T06:34:38","slug":"spectrum-new-music-for-solo-piano-from-zubin-kanga","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/?p=8699","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Spectrum&#8217; &#8211; new music for solo piano from Zubin Kanga"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8748\" title=\"ZK\" src=\"https:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ZK1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"183\" height=\"275\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Piano virtuoso\u00a0Zubin Kanga returns to Sydney from London\u00a0for\u00a0<em>Spectrum<\/em> a recital featuring\u00a0new works by composers from Australia and the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Kanga is an exponent of &#8216;new music&#8217; and in\u00a0his Sydney recital, he\u00a0will perform the music of Australian composers Rosalind Page, David Young, Marcus Whale, Anthony Moles, Andrew Harrison and Jane Stanley as well as British composer Michael Finnissy&#8217;s new work, Z\/K dedicated to Kanga and drawing on\u00a0 the broad\u00a0&#8216;spectrum&#8217;\u00a0 that contains the\u00a0symphonies of Sammartini, Mahler and Berg\u00a0 Not confined by the\u00a0piano stool and the 88 keys of the piano, Zanga&#8217;s performance is inspired by the visual arts, Australian history, technology and popular music. He challenges the\u00a0acoustic, theatrical and virtuosic conventions of the traditional piano recital incorporating movement and using all the elements of the piano in his performance &#8211; and that includes extended techniques like placing different materials on the piano strings to alter the sound.<\/p>\n<p>All the works in the program have been commissioned by Kanga, winner of the NSW State Award (Performance of the Year) at the 2012 Art Music Awards and the prestigious Michael Kieran Harvey Scholarship. This $40,000 prize supported the commissioning of these\u00a0five works\u00a0by Australian composers, which\u00a0will receive their world premieres in this concert.\u00a0\u00a0Finissy (b 1946) is presently Professor of Composition at the University of Southampton. He\u00a0studied composition at the Royal College of\u00a0Music in London and describes Kanga as having &#8220;outstanding technical accomplishment with an imagination bubbling and fizzing with the excitement of really new and challenging material.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to Sounds Like Sydney last year, Kanga explained\u00a0&#8220;All music was new music at one point &#8211; it\u2019s about pushing the boundaries and trying out new things. A lot has changed in the last 50 years. Contemporary music is very diverse and its\u00a0 audiences don\u2019t even necessarily overlap. In America you have Steve Reich and Philip Glass, they have their own audiences which overlaps with a lot of popular music and film music. Then you have the modernists like Boulez who is still a very central figure there\u2026 and then there are all these people in-between \u2013 the spectralists in France who are playing with the nature of sounds, analysing sounds and getting music out of that. What makes \u2018new music\u2019 so interesting is that it is so diverse\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><em>Being and Time II: Tabula Rasa<\/em> by Australian composer Rosalind Page,\u00a0looks to the paintings of\u00a0Australian painter, Imants Tillers and folk songs of his Latvian heritage. Setting a new creative challenge for the\u00a0performer, composer and Chamber Made Opera Artistic Director, David Young has produced the score of his new work <em>Not Music Yet<\/em> as a watercolour painting. Kanga\u00a0will draw on his skills in extended\u00a0piano techniques to translate the swirls of colour in the painting into\u00a0a\u00a0sonic experience.<\/p>\n<p>Also on the programme, Scottish-based Australian, Jane Stanley\u2019s <em>Diptych,<\/em> Marcus Whale\u2019s\u00a0<em>Errata, <\/em>which\u00a0improvises with electronics and Andrew Harrison&#8217;s <em>The drumfire was incessant, continued all night with unabated fury&#8230;&#8230;.<\/em> depicting the\u00a0terror of trench warfare based on\u00a0his family\u2019s experiences in\u00a0the French battlefields of WW1.\u00a0The<em> <\/em>recital finishes with\u00a0Anthony Moles<strong>\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0<em>Diabolic Machines<\/em>. <em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The prestigious Michael Kieran Harvey Scholarship,\u00a0has also enabled Kanga to undertake his PhD at the Royal Academy of Music in London, during which time he has performed Beat Furrer\u2019s <em>Nuun<\/em> for two pianos and orchestra alongside pianist, Rolf Hind with the\u00a0London Sinfonietta. Over his two years of\u00a0study, he has also\u00a0held solo recitals at Kings Place and the Southbank Centre where he has worked closely with leading European composers\u00a0George Benjamin, Beat Furrer and\u00a0Rolf Hind. Kanga was in Sydney again last April to perform in the Steve Reich celebration concert at the Sydney Opera House. He has recently performed at the Aldeburgh, Southbank, Many Hands and London 2012 Festivals in the UK,\u00a0and ISCM World New Music Days.\u00a0In Australia, Kanga performs with Ensemble Offspring and Halcyon and works with Australian composers\u00a0Elliott Gyger, Nicholas Vines, Daniel Rojas and Alex Pozniak.He has given\u00a0solo\u00a0recitals across Australia and Europe in venues including\u00a0Kings Place and the Purcell Room in London.<\/p>\n<p>Kanga\u2019s virtuosity, innovative programming and experimentation with new piano techniques and sounds have made him a highly sought after soloist both in Australian and abroad. A passionate advocate for Australian contemporary classical music and its representation on the international stage, the scholarship has allowed Zubin to commission and premiere 12 new piano works by Australian composers &#8211; a significant contribution to Australia\u2019s collective musical repertory at just 29 years old.<\/p>\n<p>Kanga\u00a0graduated from\u00a0the University of Sydney,\u00a0with 1<sup>st<\/sup> Class Honours and the University Medal in music. In 2007, he commenced\u00a0 a Master of Music\u00a0on a full scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music, London, studying with Rolf Hind and Kathryn Stott and graduating, with distinction,\u00a0in 2009.
