{"id":8811,"date":"2012-08-01T14:17:04","date_gmt":"2012-08-01T04:17:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/?p=8811"},"modified":"2012-08-01T14:17:04","modified_gmt":"2012-08-01T04:17:04","slug":"joy-prosperity-sacred-songs-and-prayer-the-aco-with-the-choir-of-clare-college-cambridge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/?p=8811","title":{"rendered":"Joy, prosperity, sacred songs and prayer &#8211; the ACO with the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8814\" title=\"clare\" src=\"https:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/clare.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"191\" height=\"207\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Australian Chamber Orchestra under Artistic Director and Lead Violin, Richard Tognetti, presents Beethoven&#8217;s Symphony No 9 in D minor, opus 125 in\u00a0the climax of its\u00a0cycle of Beethoven symphonies.<\/p>\n<p>It is, of course, the &#8216;Choral&#8217; Symphony and it is the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge directed by Graham Ross,\u00a0that will perform with the orchestra in the final movement. Since\u00a0the founding of a\u00a0mixed voice\u00a0ensemble in 1971, the choir\u00a0maintains a schedule of tours, recordings,\u00a0performances and\u00a0broadcasts. It has performed with major ensembles, amongst them, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment\u00a0under the direction of Ren\u00e9 Jacobs, and\u00a0the London Philharmonic Orchestra\u00a0under Edward Gardner; also with the Academy of Ancient Music and the\u00a0Freiburg Baroque Orchestra.\u00a0In 2000 it became the first Oxbridge mixed voice choir to perform at the BBC Proms, singing Bach\u2019s <em>St John Passion<\/em>. The choir has a glittering array of alumni which includes Sir John Taverner, John Rutter, Ivor Bolton, Andrew Manze, Sir Roger Norrington, Richard Egarr and Nico Muhly.<\/p>\n<p>Beethoven&#8217;s <em>Symphony No 9<\/em> was completed in 1824. He wrote it at the time he was completing three other monumental works: the <em>Hammerklavier Sonata<\/em>, the <em>Diabelli Variations<\/em> and\u00a0the <em>Mass in D<\/em> (<em>Missa solemnis<\/em>). It was a time when the profoundly deaf Beethoven, isolated in his silent world,\u00a0in fact,\u00a0began to reach beyond the individual and explore how music could\u00a0promote the\u00a0higher goals of public well-being and\u00a0the\u00a0ideals that are shared by all\u00a0of\u00a0humanity.<\/p>\n<p>The repertoire also features music that sets the words of two great German writers, Schiller and Goethe.
