The Sydney Symphony continues\u00a0its commemoration of\u00a080 years of performing\u00a0 with its tribute concerts\u00a0recognising significant moments in music history.\u00a0 This week, their fourth tribute concert\u00a0features\u00a0Aaron Copland’s\u00a0Third Symphony, (For the Common Man)<\/em> in a\u00a0look back at the composer’s\u00a0visit to Sydney in 1978.<\/p>\n

One of the most influential American composers, Copland was born in Brooklyn of Lithuanian Jewish parents. The family name was originally Kaplan. He studied with Nadia Boulanger in Paris\u00a0where he\u00a0developed a style that straddled ideas from classical and jazz, Latin and American folk music. This biographical information is important in understanding Copland’s style.<\/p>\n

\u00a0The entry of the USA into World War II\u00a0heightened his nationalism and the 1940s saw\u00a0him complete three works that speak to the broader American public.\u00a0The\u00a0Third Symphony, composer between 1944 and 1946 was one of these. The others were The Fanfare for the Common Man <\/em>and the Lincoln Portrait<\/em>. Indeed the\u00a0third symphony\u00a0contains thrilling references to his Fanfare for the Common Man.<\/em><\/p>\n

In Paris, Copland\u00a0came under the influence of Debussy and his successors, and so Debussy’s\u00a0Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun<\/em>\u00a0is an apt\u00a0programme companion to the third symphony as is From me flows what you call Time <\/em>by Toru Takemitsu which\u00a0also\u00a0begins with a\u00a0flute solo and a swells to a\u00a0wash of impressionistic colour.<\/p>\n

Takemitsu’s\u00a0work\u00a0premiered in 1990 at Carnegie Hall. It’s scored for\u00a0for five percussionists and orchestra and contains innovative\u00a0spatial effects, suspended chimes and coloured ribbons representing water, fire, earth, wind and sky. Performing it are the superbly talented percussionists of the Sydney Sympony\u2019s\u00a0who include\u00a0Rebecca Lagos, Colin Piper, Mark Robinson, Ian Cleworth, Tim Constable.<\/p>\n

Conducting this performance is American conductor Robert Spano whose distinguished career has seen him conduct\u00a0major orchestras\u00a0 around the world, amongst them, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Berlin Radio Sinfonie Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestras.<\/p>\n
