{"id":9309,"date":"2012-09-25T18:35:53","date_gmt":"2012-09-25T08:35:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/?p=9309"},"modified":"2012-09-25T18:35:53","modified_gmt":"2012-09-25T08:35:53","slug":"kuss-brings-life-to-rare-and-new-chamber-repertoire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/?p=9309","title":{"rendered":"Kuss brings life to rare and new chamber repertoire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial-BoldMT;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial-BoldMT;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9310\" title=\"kuss\" src=\"https:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/kuss.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"286\" height=\"176\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial-BoldMT;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial-BoldMT;\">The Berlin based\u00a0Kuss\u00a0Quartet joined by\u00a0Principal Viola of the Berlin Philharmonic, Naoko Shimizu, continues its national tour with a second concert in Sydney, under the auspices of Music Viva.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial-BoldMT;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial-BoldMT;\">Their first performance in Sydney last week included <\/span><\/span>Gordon\u00a0Kerry&#8217;s <em>String Quintet, <\/em>Bedrich\u00a0Smenata&#8217;s<em> String Quartet no 2 in D minor, G<\/em>y\u00f6rgy Kurtag&#8217;s\u00a0O<em><span style=\"font-family: Arial-ItalicMT;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial-ItalicMT;\">fficium Breve in Memoriam Andreae Szerv\u00e1nszky, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: ArialMT;\"><span style=\"font-family: ArialMT;\">op 28 <\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-family: ArialMT;\"><span style=\"font-family: ArialMT;\">and<\/span><\/span>WA Mozart&#8217;s\u00a0<em>String Quintet no 3 in C major, K515.<\/em> The performance earned high praise in the media (see link below).<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: ArialMT;\"><span style=\"font-family: ArialMT;\">Their second concert too presents the opportunity to hear rarely heard string quartet repertoire. In this programme they reprise Gordon Kerry&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><\/span><em>String Quintet, <\/em>(2012) a world premiere, commissioned for Musica Viva Australia by Kim Williams, AM; Mozart&#8217;s\u00a0<em>String Quartet no 21 in D major, K575, <\/em>Gy\u00f6rgy Kurtag&#8217;s <em>Officium Breve in Memoriam Andreae Szerv\u00e1nszky<\/em>, <em>op 28 <\/em>and Johannes\u00a0Brahms&#8217; <em>String Quintet no 2 in G major, op 111.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Gy\u00f6rgy Kurtag (b1926)\u00a0is a Hungarian-Jewish composer. His <em>Officium Breve in Memoriam Andreae Szerv\u00e1nszky<\/em>, <em>op 28<\/em>\u00a0 is a string quartet in 15 movements.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">The Kuss Quartet was formed in 1991 by then teenage violinists, Jana Kuss and Oliver Wille. Friends from a young age, Kuss and Wille were both students at the East Berlin Hanns Eisler music school. \u201cI can\u2019t really remember a time without the quartet,\u201d admits Wille, \u201cbut I remember that we had our first rehearsal before the Wall came down, which was 1989.\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">The group\u2019s first mentors came from the great European quartet tradition, emphasising faithfulness to the score and a disciplined questioning approach. The arrival of violist William Coleman ten years later brought a new emphasis, one that is \u201calways being flexible, always questioning but in a very different way\u201d according to second violinist Oliver Wille. This combination is, for cellist Mikayel Hakhazaryan, \u201csomething very honest, something very positive\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9311\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9311\" style=\"width: 222px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9311\" title=\"naoko\" src=\"https:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/naoko.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"222\" height=\"227\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9311\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Naoko Shimizu<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Naoko Shimizu has been a member of the Berlin Philharmonic since 2001, where she is currently Principal Viola.\u00a0She was winner of the Geneva International Competition (1996), of the\u00a0first prize at the ARD International Music Competition in Munich (1997) and\u00a0of the Young Concert Artist International Auditions in New York (1998).
