In a\u00a0landscape that is as severe as it is beautiful, survival is key, so it&#8217;s fitting that Lockley&#8217;s work <em>My Country Australia <\/em>is being performed this week to celebrate the 85th anniversary of Australia&#8217;s iconic Royal Flying Doctor Service.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><em>My Country Australia <\/em>is the third in a series of musical settings of the words of the great Australian poets and follows\u00a0the success in 2009 of Lockley\u2019s, <em>Ballads of the Bush <\/em>and <em>Symphony of Australia <\/em>which had its world premiere at the Sydney Opera House in 2007.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9749\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9749\" style=\"width: 168px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9749\" title=\"Lockley\" src=\"https:\/\/soundslikesydney.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Lockley.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"180\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9749\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gavin Lockley<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Lockley has selected poems he has loved since childhood and\u00a0set them to music, reflecting his belief that the great Australian poets and balladeers should be lifted off the page and performed to as wide an audience as possible in order to preserve our cultural history. As Lockley says &#8220;In the tradition of Mahler\u2019s <em>Des Knaben Wunderhorn<\/em> and Berlioz\u2019s <em>Les Nuits D\u2019ete<\/em> these orchestral songs express the colour and excitement of the great stories that shaped the Australian folk consciousness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Lockley&#8217;s music celebrates what it means to be Australian as he brings to life with music, \u00a0some of the nation&#8217;s\u00a0favourite poets &#8211; amongst them,\u00a0Dorothea Mackellar, Banjo Paterson, C.J.
